DIY Disco Ball Vase Craft

The current hot topic for debate in my house is whether we’re going to install a chandelier in the living room (practical, provides light, increases the house value, but requires hiring an electrician as the room isn’t yet wired for overhead lighting)… or, hang a giant disco ball up and call it a day.

Guess which option I’m rooting for?

Until I win that debate, I’m appeasing myself with these cute little disco ball vases that Ella and I made out of some 6″ disco ball ornaments leftover from a party.

You could actually make this vase into a functional vase for real flowers by inserting a mason jar or shallow vase into the base of the disco ball, but I actually think this is one of the few times that fake flowers look great.

You can even swap out the flowers depending on the season or occasion. Fake poinsettas for Christmas, red roses for Valentine’s, a pastel-colored bouquet for Easter, etc. I can’t think of a single occasion when a disco ball isn’t 100% appropriate and necessary.

I just love the little bit of whimsy and fun that this little disco ball brings to my office space, and I think I’m going to have to order this Disco Ball Hanging Plant Basket to go with it.

Materials to Make a Disco Ball Vase

Tip: if you want to use this as a vase for real flowers, insert a glass or shallow vase into the disco ball. You can insert from the bottom or the top.

How to Make a Disco Ball Vase

Start by removing some of the mirrored tiles from the bottom of the disco ball. You want to remove all of the tiles that would touch a table if the disco ball was sitting upright.

To ensure that you’ve removed enough mirror tiles, stand the disco ball so it’s standing up. You don’t want to remove so many that you can see bare spots from the sides.

Use your craft knife to cut away the styrofoam core at the bottom of the disco ball to make a flat surface for the disco ball to sit sturdily upright on.

Cut out a 3″ to 4″ circle of felt fabric to cover the base of the disco ball.

Use your hot glue or craft glue to glue the felt circle in place.

Sit the disco ball upright as you remove a few mirror tiles from the top. Just remove enough to be able to insert your flowers.

Use your craft knife or the stems of the flowers to poke holes in the styrofoam to secure the flowers. Arrange as desired.
