We’ve been back from our France family vacation for about two months now, so I am deep into post-trip nostalgia. Honey and lavender are such a classic combination that reminds me of the French countryside and all it’s bounties. This Exfoliating Lavender Honey Sugar Scrub is a great way to prep for shaving or just give your hands a bit of a refresher after some yard work.

A super simple sugar scrub with the benefits of honey and lavender. This honey sugar scrub can be used as a lip scrub or body scrub and is great for prepping skin for a smooth shave

DIY Honey and Sugar Scrub

I’ve been making homemade sugar scrubs for a little over four years now. They are an amazing way to gently exfoliate and smooth your skin in rough areas, or prepare your skin for shaving. I find that I get a closer shave (and longer lasting results) when I take the time to prep my legs with my DIY sugar scrub.

I love having fun with my scents and exploring different benefits of sugar scrubs and my recent lavender honey sugar scrub is a definite favorite!

Now, I’m going to state the obvious: if you add lots of honey, this mixture can get sticky, but since I’m using it in the shower I haven’t had any issues. All I’m experiencing are the benefits of using honey.

Honey and Sugar Scrub Benefits:

  • The sugar granules gently exfoliates.
  • Coconut oil and Vitamin E oil softens and moisturizes your skin.
  • The honey is full of antibacterial properties and antioxidants to help your skin slow down the aging process.
  • Honey also moisturizes the skin, giving it a “glow.”
  • The lavender essential oil eases skin inflammation and also contains antibacterial properties.
  • The sweet scent is calming and relaxing and helps ease stress and headaches.

This DIY sugar scrub can be used as a body scrub, a honey sugar lip scrub, a honey and sugar face scrub – since there are no harsh ingredients, you will not have any problems using it on sensitive areas. (If planning to use primarily as a honey sugar lip scrub, you may want to leave out the lavender if that will be overpowering to your sense of smell.)

Before we get into the recipe below (don’t forget to scroll down and grab your free printable recipe), I just want to give some tips on how to best apply sugar scrub:
  1. In a bath or shower, apply the honey lavender body scrub to wet skin. Enjoy the calming and relaxing scent of lavender!
  2. Using your fingers (or a bath pouf), massage the sugar scrub into your skin in a circular motion.
  3. Rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel.
  4. Apply your favorite skin moisturizer or oil.

If using as a honey sugar lip scrub, apply some water to your lips first and use your ring or pinky finger to apply the sugar scrub in a gentle circular motion.

The key to all of this is gentle massaging of the sugar scrub into the skin – let the sugar scrub do the scrubbing and keep your touch gentle, or you can end up scratching your skin which is damaging.

Essential oils can be expensive and there is a huge quality difference among the different brands out there. I highly recommend doing your own research when deciding which brands to go with. You can skip the lavender essential oil in this recipe and just rely on the benefits of the honey, coconut oil and vitamin E oil. (This in-depth consumer report compares different brands on a variety of criteria and may be a good place to start your research.)

    1. It really depends on whether you are able to keep water out of the jar. I usually go through one jar a month, but my research says that you can keep this safely for 6 months – but if unfiltered water gets it, that will make it go bad quicker.

    1. We tend to go through at least one a month between my daughter using it occasionally and me using it every time I shave my legs. My research says it could potentially last up to 6 months as long as you are careful about not getting any unfiltered water in the jar.

    1. Hi Vanessa,
Sorry for missing your comment until now. This sugar scrub lasts for a few months, but I wouldn’t make it more than 2 weeks before gifting so that the receiver can get the most use out of it.

    1. Hi Jessica,
I would assume it’s just the temperature of your coconut oil when adding to the recipe versus the temperature that it’s stored at. (My house lay-out is that my kitchen where the coconut oil is stored is next to our “main” bathroom so the liquidity of the coconut oil doesn’t change drastically.)
If you just scoop a tablespoon of the sugar scrub and mix with water before using, it shouldn’t cause any issues, but if it’s so solid that it’s hard to grab a small scoop, then I would remix with a couple tablespoons of coconut oil to get the right texture. The scrub will still work effectively if mixed with a bit of water just before using.
