Every month, I’m publishing a new copycat Crumbl cookie recipe in an attempt to save myself from my daughter’s expensive taste in cookies.

  • Simple baking ingredients and no complicated baking techniques.
  • You can swap out the sprinkle blend for holidays, parties, etc to customize them to the occasion.

Snackable History Fact: Even though most of us would think of milkshakes as a kid-friendly treat, it actually began life in the late 1800s as an adult beverage made with eggs, cream and whiskey. By the early 1900s, the drink had evolved into a nonalcoholic treat flavored with syrups and malted milk, and in 1922 Ivar “Pop” Coulson’s addition of vanilla ice cream helped define the rich, creamy milkshake style that became a soda fountain and diner staple.

Recipe FAQs

Why are my cookies spreading too much?

Butter that is too soft or warm can cause excess spread. Chill the dough for 20 to 30 minutes if needed.

How do I get thick bakery-style cookies?

Weighing the dough to around 2.5 ounces and keeping the dough balls tall rather than wide helps maintain thickness.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes, bake the cookies and store unfrosted for up to 2 days, then frost before serving.
Or you can refrigerate the dough for 2 days – allow to sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before scooping and portioning.
The unfrosted cookies freeze well for up to 2 months. Frost after thawing for best results. (You can also freeze the frosting, but freeze separately from the cookies.)

Do I have to use a piping bag for the frosting?

No, you can spread it with a knife, but piping gives the signature Crumbl look.

How should I store leftovers?

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days. Bring to room temperature before serving.

How to Make Copycat Crumbl Milkshake Cookies

Preheat oven to 350F and line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside.

Using a electric mixer, beat the butter for 1 minute, then add in the sugar and beat for 2 minutes, followed by the eggs and vanilla. Beat until combined and fluffy.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder.

Gradually beat the dry ingredients into the wet until a soft dough forms.

Using a medium ice cream scooper, portion out the dough and roll into 2″ sized balls. If you have a food scale on hand, weigh the cookie dough balls to ensure each is 2.5oz to ensure they will bake evenly.

Pour the sprinkles into a bowl and roll each cookie dough ball into the sprinkles to coat.

Place the cookies on the prepared cookie sheets and lightly flatten into a thick disk, about 3/4″ thick.

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until lightly brown with set edges. Cool as you prepare the frosting.

How to Make the Vanilla Frosting:

Using an electric mixer, beat the butter for 1 minute, then add the powdered sugar and vanilla and beat for 3 minutes. Add the cream and salt (if using) and beat until combined and smooth and holds a soft peak when the beaters are pulled away from the bowl. Taste and adjust.

Scoop the frosting into the piping bag.

Starting from the middle of the cookies, pipe a thick spiral of frosting from the middle to the edge of the cookies.

Allow the frosting to set before storing or serving.

Milkshake Cookie Recipe Variations:

  • Swap half the vanilla extract for almond extract to create a birthday cake flavor profile with more depth. (This is a trick I use for most of our homemade sugar cookies.)
  • Use pastel or seasonal sprinkles to match holidays or events without changing the base recipe.
  • Replace 1/2 cup of flour with cake flour for an even softer, more tender crumb.
  • Fold a small handful of white chocolate chips into the dough for added richness without overpowering the vanilla base.
  • Roll the cookies in crushed OREOs for a cookies & cream twist.

Tips for the Perfect Milkshake Cookies

  • Use room temperature butter that is soft but not greasy. Proper consistency ensures the dough creams correctly and holds structure.
  • Do not overmix once the flour is added. Overworking the dough can make the cookies dense instead of soft.
  • Measure flour accurately using the spoon-and-level method to avoid dry cookies. (If you have a food scale, it will be 684g.)
  • Roll the dough evenly in sprinkles, pressing gently so they adhere without distorting the shape.
  • Let cookies cool completely before frosting to prevent the buttercream from melting or sliding.
  • If you have a food scale, measuring the portioned cookie dough balls before baking will help ensure even bake times and large, Crumbl-style sizes.
