Chicken Avocado Salad Recipe
We’ve been on a real sandwich kick over here. From air-fryer meatball subs to simple BLTs, nearly every day that’s what everyone wants for lunch.
Recently, Ella requested chicken salad which I also like, but I wanted to swap out the mayo for something lighter – and I was told in no uncertain terms that she would not eat a chicken salad made with Greek yogurt. That girl put her foot down! LOL
So, I suggested we try it with avocado replacing most (but not all) of the mayo, and if she didn’t like it, I would still make a classic chicken salad for her. She reluctantly agreed to give it a try and luckily we both loved it!
The result was a naturally dairy-free and gluten-free chicken salad that is satisfying without feeling heavy, with the mild, nutty and earthy flavor of the avocado cut through with the tang of Dijon mustard and a zip of green onions.
Making chicken salad with avocado is a great option if you still want a creamy, rich chicken salad without all of the mayo. You still get the same chicken salad texture but now with more flavor and health benefits!

Snackable History Fact: 5000 years ago, the Aztecs cherished avocado as both a delicacy and an aphrodisiac, naming it ahuacatl in Nahuatl (their word for the male body part that comes in pairs) because the avocados grow in pairs and symbolized love and fertility.

Recipe FAQs
Yes, but it is best eaten within 24 hours. The avocado will start to brown, even when refrigerated.
Add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice and press plastic wrap directly against the surface before refrigerating.
Rotisserie chicken, poached chicken breast or leftover grilled chicken all work well. Just avoid heavily seasoned or sauced chicken.
You can reduce or omit the mayonnaise entirely, though the texture will be slightly less creamy.

Avocado Chicken Salad Recipe Variations:
- Add lime juice and cilantro for a brighter, Southwestern-style version.
- Mix in finely diced celery or cucumber for extra crunch and freshness.
- Swap Dijon for whole grain mustard to introduce a slightly more textured, tangy bite.
- Stir in chopped bacon or turkey bacon for a savory, smoky layer.
- Add halved cherry tomatoes for a juicy contrast that lightens the richness.

Tips for the Perfect Avocado Chicken Salad
- Use ripe but not overripe avocados. They should yield gently when pressed but not feel mushy or stringy.
- Shred or chop the chicken into small, even pieces so it mixes evenly with the avocado base.
- You can mash one avocado fully and leave the second slightly chunky for better texture contrast.
- Taste before adding all the mustard. Dijon strength varies, and too much can overpower the avocado.
- Chill for at least 20 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld and improve texture.
- Add a bit of the white part of the green onion for a bit of sharpness.
