Jalapeno Poppers Wontons Recipe
Every couple months or so, our family has an appetizers and movie marathon night. We hit up the grocery store right before and grab whatever frozen appetizers look enticing, and last movie night I grabbed a very overpriced bag of jalapeno popper wontons.
They were so good – but the bag was entirely too small and they were the first appetizer of the night to disappear. I’ve been craving them ever since so I decided to try my hand at making them from scratch – in a much bigger batch!
These jalapeno popper wontons have that perfect crispy exterior that gives way to a creamy, soft filling when bitten into. The jalapeno popper filling can be adjusted to your personal heat preferences by either discarding the jalapeno popper seeds or leaving them in. Either way, the jalapenos, cheese, bacon and seasonings make for a flavorful filling.
If you’ve never made wontons before, they are incredibly easy! The most important things to keep in mind when making wontons are:
- keep the wonton wrappers moist as they wait to be filled and wrapped by placing a wet paper towel over them (this prevents them from cracking)
- don’t overfill the wontons as that will possibly cause them to crack when folded or not seal completely
- ensure that all edges of the wontons are well-sealed to prevent the filling from leaking out and burning in the hot oil
- ensure your hot oil is very hot (about 350F) before starting to fry the wontons to preven the wontons from absorbing too much oil
Folding them also looks a lot harder than it actually is! To fold the wontons the way that I show here, wet the edges of the wonton wrapper with egg wash, then fold the top and left sides of the square over to form a triangle. Press down firmly to seal.
Then, wet the corners of the longest side of the triangle and then bring them to the center of the wonton, pressing the corners together firmly (but not pressing down on the filled wonton).
If you prefer a baked jalapeno popper wonton instead of fried, there are two different methods that you can try:
- spray down a cookie sheet with non-stick baking spray and place the prepared wontons on the sheet. Bake at 400F for 5-7 minutes
- or, make Jalapeno Popper Wonton Cups: liberally spray a muffin tray with non-stick baking spray and press the wonton wrappers into the muffin cavities, forming a cup. Bake at 350F for 10 minutes. Then, fill with the jalapeno popper cream cheese mixture and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes.
If you’d prefer to airfry your jalapeno popper wontons, prepare the wontons as directed in the recipe below. Give the tops of the wontons a light spray with your favorite oil and set your airfryer to 350F for five minutes, then flip, re-spray and bake for an additional 5 minutes.

How to Make Jalapeno Cream Cheese Wontons
In a large bowl, beat together the cream cheese, sour cream, salt and pepper until cream cheese is well-whipped and soft.
Add the Worcestershire sauce, diced Jalapenos, chopped bacon and shredded cheddar cheese and beat until well-combined.
Lay a few wontons out on a cutting board and place a wet paper towel over the remaining wonton wrappers to keep them from drying out.
Scoop 1 teaspoon of the jalapeno-cream cheese filling into the center of each wonton wrapped.
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and a teaspoon of water.
Brush the edges of each wonton wrapper with the egg mixture and then folder over into a triangle shape, pressing to seal and remove all air from the wonton.
Brush the two edges of the long side of the triangle with the egg wash and fold over each other, just above the center of the wonton, pressing the center of the wonton up to form a crease, as shown.
Repeat with all wontons and filling.
Place the cooking oil in a heavy pan or dutch oven and heat to 300F.
Fry the wontons 3-4 at a time until lightly golden, flipping over halfway through cooking, about 3 minutes each batch.
Repeat until all wontons are fried.
Makes approximately 56 Wontons.

Do you think these could be prepared ahead of time, then cooked the next day?
Hi Dels, Thank you for your comment and question. Preparing them ahead of time can be done, but it’s tricky so that’s why I didn’t suggest it in the blog post.
If you place some wax or parchment paper on the bottom of a container and then place a damp paper towel on top of the prepared wontons, they should be okay overnight – the issue is that you don’t want the wontons to dry out or get too soggy. If they get too dry, the wonton wrappers will crack and the filling will then spill out when frying; if too soggy, the oil will react.
