Sesame Seed Bagels Recipe
We’re halfway through out homemade bagels recipe series and today I’m sharing what I consider to be a classic – Sesame Seed Bagels.
As a Canadian who lives in the States half of the time, there are few spots outside of NYC that make a good sesame seed bagel, so when I find myself craving a back-to-the-basics bagel to enjoy with plenty of toppings, I have to make it myself. Grocery store sesame seed bagels just don’t measure up to a good Montreal-style sesame seed bagel.
Sesame seed bagels are basic, but that’s because they are meant to be slathered with cream cheese (or schmear), toppings like smoked salmon and other savory toppings like capers or pickled red onions – they are a sturdy vessel for toppings not suited for sweet toppings like pancakes or waffles. (However, they would easily work with sweet toppings, if desired.)
There is a significant different when adding sesame seeds to the nutritional qualities in this recipe. They are a great addition for those who are looking to add more fibre and protein to their breakfasts – but if you are only looking at calorie counts, leave them off of your bagels.
With the sesame seeds, these bagels clock in at 334 calories each but a whopping 4.8g fibre and 13g protein.
Without the sesame seeds, the bagels are only 143 calories but also only 1g fibre and 7g protein.
Personally, I’m most interested in the protein and fibre content – but it is shocking to look at what a simple addition of a sprinkle sesame seeds adds to your day.

Can I use all-purpose flour instead of self-rising flour? If you don’t have self-rising flour, you can substitute with 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2.5 teaspoons baking powder and 0.5 teaspoon salt.
How to store homemade chocolate chip bagels: store at room temperature in a sealed container for up to 2 days for optimal freshness. Alternatively, store in the fridge for up to a week.
You can freeze these bagels for up to 3 months in an airtight freezer container or ziptop freezer bag. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.)
Can I make these Greek yogurt bagels in the air fryer? Yes, you can bake them in the air fryer at 280F for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through the baking time.
Tips for Making 3-Ingredient Bagels:
- If you try this recipe and want your bagels to be chewier, you can swap out the self-rising flour for bread flour.
- Must use full-fat GREEK yogurt for best results. It helps make the bagels tender and the acid in the yogurt reacts with the baking powder to act as a leavening agent in the bagels.
- However, you can use a flavoured Greek Yogurt to add in additional flavour profiles without increasing the number of ingredients you need to incorporate in the recipe.
- For a golden, chewy exterior, brush the bagels with an egg wash just before baking
- Can whip up the bagel dough (and even shape the bagels) a day or two before (just be sure to let it come to room temperature before baking).
- Can form the bagels into different shapes, like bagel-style breadsticks, dinner rolls, or fun shapes like Mickey Mouse bagels, heart-shaped bagels, etc.

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful
- Electric mixer <– this is a great hand mixer if you don’t want to make the investment into a stand mixer
- Measuring Cups and Spoons
- Mixing Bowl
- Dough Cutter
- Cookie Sheet
- Silicone Baking Mat
- Pastry Brush <– I like these because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty.

How to Make Sesame Seed Bagels
Preheat oven to 475F
Set up your electric mixer with a kneading/paddle attachment, if you have one.
In the bowl of your electric mixer, combine the self-raising flour and yogurt and knead for 6 minutes until a ball forms. Add additional self-raising flour as needed. (The moisture of your yogurt may affect the exact quantities.)

If you don’t have an electric mixer, you will need to knead the dough by hand for the 6 minutes.
Once the dough forms a cohesive, elastic ball of dough, remove it from the bowl and place on a work space dusted with additional flour.

Divide the dough into 6 equal portions, then form each portion of dough into a bagel. Make them wider with a bigger hole than a normal bagel as they will get smaller with baking.
Place the formed bagels onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Brush the bagels with the egg white.
Sprinkle the sesame seeds onto each bagel.
Bake for 10-14 minutes, until tops of bagels are golden brown.
Makes 6.

Good article and useful information
Just tried this recipe. It was so simple. Four ingredients made it better than store bought ones.
Made these for my kids last weekend. Greek yogurt added protein. The sesame seeds smelled amazing. Great healthy breakfast.
