Baking is one of my favorite things to do with the kids in my daycare and with my own daughter. It’s a great way to teach simple chemistry, measurements and counting, as well as practical life skills and cooperative team work (if you’re in a group). Today, I’m excited to share our Top Ten Cakes Kids Can Make – make sure to pin this for your next special event!
Since the kids help in the kitchen every single day in my house, we have a kids’ kitchen cupboard set up with all of their child-sized tools easily accessible for them, as well as aprons that they have all personalized.
Baking with kids is a great way to develop skills, but it also builds confidence and gives children an ability to experience the joy of sharing their creations with other people and watching them enjoy their treats.
I’ll admit: it can get messy. Sometimes they mis-measure, sometimes bits of eggshell get in the batter – it’s not always Pinterest perfect. But I think it’s important to avoid the desire to hover or take over in order for children to truly develop the necessary skills and also for them to feel pride in their work. If you’re not ready to hand over a full recipe creation to your kids, try giving them specific jobs that you’re okay with not micromanaging – like stirring the batter, frosting the cake, etc. Try to trust them with tasks that you won’t feel tempted to take over.
