Piggies in a Blanket Recipe

For years, I’ve purchased frozen Piggies in a Blanket or Mini Sausage Rolls for a crowd-pleasing appetizer for a variety of occasions, but now that I’ve made them “from scratch” I don’t think I’ll ever buy them pre-made again!

While it’s a bit rich to call these Piggies in a Blanket homemade since they are just 5 ingredients and feature pre-made croissant dough, they are a decadent departure from the frozen variety.

Homemade Piggies in a Blanket feature juicy, succulent pork sausages wrapped up in buttery, flakey croissant dough. I add a bit of dijon mustard to the wraps for a hit of spicy tang and a sprinkle of poppyseeds for crunch which (while super easy to incorporate) elevates these easy appetizers to restaurant-worthy quality.

Homemade Piggies in a Blanket are perfect for parties, a fun movie night appetizer or a cute lunch box item for the kids. It is much cheaper for me to make these for lunchboxes than to send the Lunchable Hot Dog boxes and my daughter has said they are much tastier!

Serve these piggies in a blanket with fun dipping sauces like honey mustard, BBQ, spicy mayo, ranch dip, etc.

Piggies in a Blanket Variations:

  • Use cut up hot dogs instead of mini sausages
  • Use Vienna sausages instead of mini sausages
  • Use puff pastry instead of croissant dough
  • Add cheese by laying a small slice alongside the sausage before rolling up, or sprinkle overtop of the rolled pastries
  • Wrap the sausages in bacon instead of crescent dough
  • Swap out the poppyseeds for flaky sea salt, everything but the bagel seasoning, or other favorite seasonings

Piggies in a Blanket in Different Cultures

These North American-style Piggies in a Blanket differ from English Piggies in a Blanket which are rolled in bacon, not pastry. (Sausage rolls are popular, but they aren’t quite the same as they feature seasoned minced pork in a puff pastry.)

In the Netherlands, Worstenbroodje are a minced beef sausage in a bread roll. In contrast to the “saucijzenbrood”, the Brabantian worstenbrood is not made from puff pastry, but made from soft white bread dough

In Mexico, Salchitaco are cut up sausages or hot dogs fried in corn tortillas.

In Estonia, Viineripirukas are pre-made sausages wrapped in dough – the most similar to our Piggies in a Blanket.

In Hong Kong, Cheung jai Baau featured fluffy steamed mantou dough wrapped over cured Chinese sausages. You can find a recipe for Cheung jai Baau here from The Woks of Life.

In Israel, Moshe Ba’Tevia, which translates to “Moses in the basket” feature a phyllo-style flaky dough wrapped over a beef-based sausage as pork is not kosher.

I really enjoyed learning about all of the different iterations of this classic appetizer and that so many cultures have their own versions of it – and I think it gives a few fun variations to try out as you make this recipe as it’s always a crowd pleaser!
