OREO Cookie Balls Recipe
These tasty treats are a classic no-bake recipe that we’ve made over and over again in our home – from the standard version to fancier iterations like our Snowmen OREO Balls or Christmas Tree truffles.
OREO Cookie Balls are made with just 3 ingredients (4 if you count the white chocolate drizzle). Sweet OREO cookies, tangy cream cheese and creamy milk chocolate coating combine to make a luscious, tangy and sweet truffle that is absolutely irresistible and makes a great homemade gift that your recipient will savor.
You can prep these ahead of a special occasion and freeze them to save time, especially during the busy holiday season.
I made today’s OREO cookie truffles with my daughter so they are pretty simple with just a drizzle of white chocolate to decorate, but you can make them fancy with different decorations. (Check out our suggested variations below – including links to other fancier OREO balls that I’ve made throughout the years.)
I include several suggestions for variations below and tips on how to expertly execute this recipe, but the biggest “trick” with these recipes is being able to coat the OREO balls in chocolate without making a mess and allowing the chocolate coating to look great. Using chocolate dipping tools are a great way to expertly execute the chocolate dipping process.
We often just use a fork, but that’s always hit or miss. Some people prefer a toothpick, however I find that method a bit tricky as sometimes the truffle doesn’t come off the toothpick easily and then you have to use a second toothpick to help maneuver the truffle off of the first toothpick to avoid leaving fingerprints on the chocolate.
OREO Cookie Ball Variations:
- Shape the OREO Cookie Balls using a mold, as we did with our Frozen OREO Truffles, OREO Christmas Trees, etc.
- Stack the OREO balls and turn them into OREO Snowmen
- Use different flavors of OREOs
- Sprinkle the finished OREO balls with crushed peppermints for a mint chocolate treat (this is perfect if using Mint OREOs)
- Use almond bark instead of melted chocolate
- Use any type of excess cookies to make a cookie truffle, like we did with our sugar cookie truffles
- Swap 4oz of the cream cheese for creamy peanut butter for a chocolate peanut butter treat
- Add sprinkles or chopped nuts as a garnish (you can also add them to the truffle mixture, if desired)
- Place a maraschino cherry in the centre for a sweet surprise

OREO Cookie Balls Tips:
- Dipping tools will make this recipe incredibly easy.
- Ensure your cream cheese is softened at room temperature to ensure it blends easily with the OREOs
- Use a food processor or blender to crush the OREOs for the smoothest possible texture
- Chill the OREO truffles before dipping in the chocolate to prevent them from falling apart while dipping
- Allow the melted chocolate to cool slightly before dipping so they don’t shock the OREO truffles (allow to sit for about 2-3 minutes)
- Work in batches (don’t try to dip all of the truffles at once)
- If using sprinkles to garnish the truffles, do so within a couple minutes of dipping in chocolate so the garnishes stick
- Use regular OREOs (not thins or double stuff) for the best truffle consistency
- If your chocolate is too thick, it may need a brief 10 second reheating, or you can incorporate a teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening to help loosen it up
How to Store OREO Cookie Balls: Because of the cream cheese, these OREO balls should be kept in the fridge if not serving within a day of making them. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.
How to Freeze OREO Cookie Balls: Store in a ziptop freezer bag or your favorite freezer containers for up to 2 months. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.) Use parchment or wax paper to separate layers of the truffles to prevent them from sticking.
