Melting Snowman Cinnamon Rolls Recipe
I am so excited for winter break.
I love when my daughter gets those uninterrupted weeks at home with no school and no extra-curricular activities to attend and we can fill our days with fun, memory-making activities.
These Snowman Cinnamon Buns were a fun food craft that we baked up together last year as a sweet surprise for family movie night. It was a cozy way to “build a snowman” without ever setting foot outside and the result was 8 adorable, tasty treats. (They were almost too cute to eat!)
This recipe uses pre-made cinnamon buns, since the focus here is really on those delightful little snowman decorations. However, if you want a real treat and don’t mind spending some extra time, you won’t regret making our Copycat Cinnabon Recipe as a swap for the pre-made cinnamon buns.
Melting Snowman Cinnamon Buns Recipe Variations:
- Added Accessories: Feel free to get creative and give each snowman its own unique personality. Maybe one has a tilted hat or another is wearing a bowtie! (Sprinkles and piped candy melts can make a variety of different accessories.)
- Melting Effect: For a realistic melting effect, add some icing or marshmallow cream to the sides of the marshmallows, oozing down to the cinnamon rolls.
- Coconut Snow: Sprinkle a little unsweetened shredded coconut around the base of each snowman for a soft “snow” texture.
- Different Sweet Rolls: Not a huge fan of cinnamon buns or just want something a bit different? We have lots of different sweet roll recipes that would be a great swap – like our Lemon Sticky Rolls, Strawberry Sweet Rolls or (perfect for winter) our Gingerbread Cinnamon Buns.

Melting Snowman Cinnamon Rolls Recipe FAQs
Why is heavy cream poured over the rolls? The cream enriches the dough as it bakes, keeping the rolls soft and creating a glossy, custard-like base. You can skip this step if you’d prefer.
Can the snowmen be assembled ahead of time? You can decorate the marshmallow faces a day in advance. Assemble the pretzel-marshmallow bodies just before serving so the pretzels don’t soften.
How do I prevent the icing from running too much? Let the rolls cool for a few minutes before piping the “melted snow” so it gently softens instead of pooling. If you continue to have issues, beat some powdered icing sugar into the icing to help thicken it.

How to Make Melting Snowman Cinnamon Buns
Begin by placing cinnamon rolls in a dish and pouring heavy cream over the top of the cinnamon rolls.
Cover with foil and bake at 350F for 30 minutes.

While the cinnamon rolls are baking, prepare the icing.
You will need to dye 1/4 cup of the plain vanilla icing orange and a second 1/4 cup dyed black. Scoop each dyed icing into it’s own piping bag. Snip a very small hole at the tip for a very fine piping tip.

Take one large marshmallow and, using the black icing, make two black dots for the snowman eyes and 5 black dots for his mouth/smile. Then, take the orange icing and make a carrot shape for his nose.
Repeat with all 8 marshmallows and set aside.

When the cinnamon rolls have finished baking, remove from the oven and ice each roll with the pre-made icing that came in the tube. Allow to cool slightly, though you still want the cinnamon buns to be somewhat warm for the next step to allow the marshmallows to stick easily.
Take a pretzel stick and poke it through one plain marshmallow, placing the marshmallow around the pretzel’s middle, then press one of the “snowman head” marshmallows onto the top of the stick, forming the head and body of the snowman on the pretzel.

Place the bare end of the pretzel stick into the cinnamon roll.
Pipe white icing around the base of the marshmallow body and allow to melt and run down onto the cinnamon rolls, forming the melted snow part of the snowman.

Place a piece of rope candy around the neck of the snowman to make his scarf, add a drop of frosting if needed to secure in place.
Use three M&Ms for his buttons and two pretzel sticks broken in half for his arms, placing them around the snowman ontop of the frosted cinnamon bun.
Repeat with all snowmen/cinnamon buns.
