Kids’ Kitchen: Apple Pie

| |

Apple pie desserts are always a good idea in the fall, and this super easy apple pie recipe – perfect for kids to make mini apple pies, but delicious enough that you could serve it for Thanksgiving supper!

Best Apple Pie Recipe

We’ve actually made no less than five apple pies from this recipe in the past couple of weeks – this easy apple pie recipe is that good.

This delicious apple pie is super easy for the kids to make as there are less steps than in a traditional pie recipe, and there are no tricky baking techniques. Normally, you would want to be careful to not overwork a dough, but this easy pie dough can even be played with by children without effecting the final product. It’s absolutely foolproof.

While this recipe works great for full-sized pies, I tend to make mini apple pies with my daycare kids so that they can each take a pie home with them to share with their families. (You can also double the recipe so that you get one full-size apple pie and a couple individual pies that the kids can customize.)

I taught Ella to weave her lattice topping off of the pie, “pick it up” with a rolling pin, and then roll it overtop of the pie, before sealing the ends with a fork – but you could alternatively cover the pie with cookie cutter pie dough shapes.

(One of my daycare kids make this super cute Butterfly Mini Apple Pie:)

I perfected this recipe several years ago, well before Ella or any notion for clean eating so there is quite a bit of sugar in the filling. This could easily be substituted by honey or a raw sugar, but we haven’t tried that yet so I cannot vouch for the results.

There are a couple of ingredients that may seem a bit odd in a dessert (like apple cider vinegar) but trust me, it will turn out delicious. (Just make sure to use a good quality apple cider vinegar, if possible.)

How to Make the Best Apple Pie Recipe

Prepare your filling first, simply peel and chop the apples and then mix in the remaining ingredients in a large bowl.

Let the filling sit as you prepare the crust to let the flavours settle.

Mix the crust ingredients together with a fork or your hands.

You still want the dough to crack easily, this will not be smooth like a play dough.

Roll the dough out, line your pie plates, and fill with apple filling before topping however you’d like.

My kids love to make customized pie crusts for the top, and it also doubles to help indicate which pie belongs to who.

Bake at 400F for 40minutes, covered with tinfoil, then remove tinfoil and cook for an additional 10-20 minutes.

  1. We made a regular size pie. After 55 minutes it still wasnt done and apples were still firm. We could tell because we did the strip crust on top and could see the apples.

    1. Hi Melissa,
Thank you for letting me know! I made a few last year, but to be honest, I let the filling sit for quite a while as I prepared the dough and all of the crusts, so I didn’t run into this issue.
I’m going to make a video for this post this month and see if cooking the apples a bit first helps or what to adjust the baking time to – I want to keep this recipe as easy as possible for little helpers while still resulting in a perfect apple pie. I’ll report back, but sorry for any issues you experienced this time around.
