Kid-made Felt Bracelets, an easy jewelry craft for kids - sweet homemade jewelry for Mother's Day or dress-up

No-Sew Felt Bracelet Craft

My daughter is a serious jewelry hoarder.

Without a word of exaggeration, she already owns more jewelry now at six years old than I ever have. I recently encouraged her to pare down to just 3 jewelry boxes and she convinced her grandpa to let her bring the other two to his house!

A lot of her collection is hand-me-downs from friends and family, but occasionally she has wanted to buy something overpriced and fancy – only to be disappointed when it inevitably breaks. So I’ve been trying to encourage her to try to make something at home instead. Even when the bracelets don’t last quite as long or turn out quite as fancy, I still think they are way better than anything she could buy in a store – and she is so proud of her creations!

We’ve made these for our own use but also as sweet homemade gifts. They would also be an awesome birthday party activity that would double as a take-home gift (better than a goody bag full of plastic).

Now, kids obviously have to be gentle while taking these on or off because they are no-sew and are just relying on the adhesive to keep the velcro in place. If you’re concerned about that, you can add a few stitches to reinforce the velcro and they won’t have to be as gentle.

The best part about this jewelry craft is that kids can really customize their bracelets however they want to make the bracelet of their dreams. We made a variety – bracelets with fabric paint designs, bracelets with fun felt cut-outs, and bracelets with lots of bling. Ella also made a set of matching “diamond bracelets” (white felt with acrylic gemstones) so she could have matching bracelets with her friends.

(And the second best part about this craft is that the cost of buying enough felt and embellishments to make a couple dozen bracelets is about equal to buying one junky costume bracelet at those trendy kids’ jewelry stores.)

Materials to Make Felt Bracelets

  • different colored felt sheets
  • Velcro fasteners
  • Sharp scissors
  • Glue (see tip)
  • Embellishments – we used gemstones from Oriental Trading Co. and that pretty felt flower
  • Fabric paint, optional

Tip: we started using felt glue but it takes a while to dry so we switched to hot glue halfway through.

Tip #2: I found that kids’ scissors just could not cut the felt – we had to use our sharp kitchen scissors. If you want to avoid that, I would suggest pre-cutting the strips and shapes for your bracelets.

How to Make No-Sew Felt Bracelets

Using sharp scissors or shape cutters, cut the felt into your desired shapes.

To cut the strips, measure the width of your wrist then add an inch for the velcro fastener.

Lay out your felt bracelet designs to determine where everything should go.

Once you have perfected the design that you want, glue down each piece individually.

Securely attach the velcro pieces to the ends of the bracelet so that they touch when the bracelet is formed into a circle (on opposite ends and sides). We used additional glue as I didn’t feel the adhesive that the velcro came with was sufficient.

Let everything dry before wearing the bracelets.
