Jumbo Apple Cinnamon Muffins Recipe
Muffins are one of my favorite recipes to make with the kids – there’s no need for a mixer, you can add ingredients out of order and even mis-measure or spill a bit of your ingredients and they still tend to turn out pretty darn perfect.
And since we just picked 40 pounds of apples at our annual apple orchard visit (a new record), making apple muffins was a no-brainer. We’ve previously made these apple vanilla muffins, caramel apple muffins and caramel apple coffee cake muffins, and while those would have all been great options, I wanted to try to replicate one of my bakery favorites: Apple Streusel Muffins.
And, since we were going for a bakery copycat, I naturally had to pull out the jumbo muffin pan. (Don’t worry, I include how to make standard-size muffins with this recipe in the FAQ section below.)
These Jumbo Apple Cinnamon Streusel Muffins have a soft and tender, cinnamon-vanilla flavored crumb studded with sweet, diced apples and are topped with a crunchy, buttery, brown sugar-cinnamon streusel topping. The contrast of textures of the crunchy apples and streusel to the soft muffin crumb along with the fall-forward flavors of spicy, earthy cinnamon, sweet apples and fragrant vanilla make this a comforting and satisfying fall treat.
Apple Cinnamon Muffin Variations
- Use cooled brown butter in the batter for a nutty depth.
- Add finely chopped toasted pecans or walnuts to the streusel topping.
- Replace cinnamon with five-spice powder or apple pie spice for a unique flavor profile.
- Substitute chopped pears or fresh berries for the apples.
- Add a 1/4 cup of quick oats to the streusel topping for a more toothsome texture.

Apple Crumb Muffin FAQs
Can I make these apple cinnamon muffins gluten-free? Yes, use a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour blend for a seamless swap.
How to store apple cinnamon streusel muffins: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days or in the fridge for up to a week. Allow muffins to come to room temperature (or warm them up for 30 seconds in the microwave) before enjoying for the best flavor and texture.
Can these apple cinnamon muffins be frozen? Yes, this is a great recipe to prep ahead and freeze – especially if you know you have a busy season coming up. To freeze, store in a airtight freezer bag or your favorite freezer containers (this set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain) and freeze for up to 3 months.
What is the best apple to use in making apple cinnamon muffins? The best baking apples hold their shape and offer a balance of sweetness and tartness. Varieties like Granny Smith, Braeburn, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady and Jonagold are excellent choices. Combining a tart apple like Granny Smith with a sweeter one like Honeycrisp can add complex flavor and a balance of sweetness to tartness in your muffins. (We used Honeycrisp since that’s our favorite and we just picked 20 pounds of them, so we had plenty to spare.)
Can I use grated apples instead of chopped apples? Yes, though since grated apples will add more moisture to the muffins you will want to squeeze out as much excess moisture as you can before adding the grated muffins, and you might need to increase the baking time to accomodate for the added moisture content. (If you find that the muffin tops are browning too much as you increase the baking time, you can cover lightly with a sheet of tinfoil.)
How to make this recipe as standard-sized apple cinnamon muffins: you can make this recipe into regular-sized apple cinnamon muffins instead of the jumbo ones described here by using a standard muffin pan and reducing the amount of batter in each cavity to about 1/2 cup (filling each muffin liner about 3/4 of the way full). Adjust the baking time to 18-22 minutes, adding the crumble topping at the 4-5 minute mark.

How to Make Cinnamon Apple Muffins with a Streusel Topping
Preheat oven to 400F.
Line a jumbo muffin tin with large muffin liners and set aside.

In a small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda and cinnamon until well-combined. Set aside.

In a large bowl, beat together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

Beat in the eggs, Greek yogurt and vanilla extract until well-combined.

Add the dry ingredients to the batter, then stir in the chopped apples.

Distribute the muffin batter evenly among the prepared muffin liners, filling as close to the top of the liners as possible.

For the streusel, stir together all ingredients and then sprinkle overtop of the muffins.

Bake for 8 minutes, then reduce heat to 350F and continue to bake for 15-20 minutes until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
Makes 6 jumbo muffins.
