Instant Pot Dulce de Leche Brownies
After making our Instant Pot Dulce de Leche recipe, I had to come up with a decadent Dulce de Leche dessert! These Instant Pot Dulce de Leche Brownies are a rich and fudgy brownie recipe with gorgeous chocolate and caramel flavors.
Instant Pot Dulce de Leche Brownies Recipe
This recipe is for the true dulce de leche fans!
A rich, luscious and fudgey brownie that is super sweet and just melts in your mouth. If you want to cut the sweetness, sprinkle the brownies with a pinch of sea salt before serving.
I adapted my stovetop brownies recipe to include homemade dulce de leche and then be cooked in the Instant Pot. The Instant Pot works by essentially “steaming” the dessert, so it has a softer, fudgier texture than brownies cooked in the oven.
Note: the brownies in these pictures were cooked for 45 minutes. The texture is perfect if you like the softer texture of brownies after melting some ice cream on top of them, but if you’d prefer a sturdier brownie, cook for 50 minutes (as indicated in the recipe below).
Now, I added the dulce de leche sauce right into the brownie batter, but you can instead swirl it into the brownies after they have been added to the ramekin/baking dish. You can also layer it, so that you have a layer of brownie batter, a layer of dulce de leche, and then a top layer of brownie. Whatever you’d like!
Is dulce de leche the same as sweetened condensed milk? No, dulce de leche has a caramel flavor and thicker texture than sweetened condensed milk. However, dulce de leche can be made from cooking sweetened condensed milk (or milk and sugar). You cannot use plain sweetened condensed milk in the recipe – it must be caramel or dulce de leche.
Can I use caramel in place of dulce de leche in this recipe? Yes, if necessary, but the flavor will be different and the texture a little less fudgy. There are a few differences between dulce de leche and caramel, starting with how they are made. Dulce de leche is always made from milk – whether sweetened condensed milk or regular milk and sugar. Caramel is made with water and sugar, often butter or milk as well. The taste is distinctly different, too, with a more milk-based flavor and the texture is generally thicker.
Can this dulce de leche brownie recipe be made in the crockpot? Yes, you will need to cook on low for 8-10 hours using the same method.
