This recipe is for all the other French Onion soup fans out there.

A decadent and delicious skillet steak recipe, this French Onion Steak recipe is super easy to make on a busy weeknight

French Onion Steak Recipe

French Onion soup is one of my favorite appetizers.

If I spot it on a menu, I have a realllly hard time resisting it. And I probably make my homemade version at least once a month (to Ella’s chagrin because she is decidedly NOT a fan of French Onion soup).

I’ve been on a bit of a caramelized onions kick recently, and while planning a meal of zucchini, caramelized onions and steak, it occurred to me that the only thing missing to take this from just steak n’onions to FRENCH ONION STEAK was simply a bit of broth and a slice of cheese.

Done.

And while that may sound like just a simple addition, I don’t think I can accurately describe just how delicious this French Onion Steak recipe really is.

It’s flavorful, perfectly cooked and so incredibly satisfying.

This is a great recipe to use if you’re using a lower-quality cut of meat for the steak, as the flavor from the gravy really makes up for it. (As for the texture of cheap cuts, I like to marinate them overnight in a bit of cheap but good Portuguese wine to help make them soft as butter.)

Oh, and Ella? The child who snubs French Onion Soup? And also is not a huge fan of steak? (Most kids seem to find steak too chewy.) She adores this recipe… as long as there is plenty of that onion gravy ladled on top!

As a bonus, this steak recipe is also low carb so if you’re like me and have found yourself surrounded by low carb friends, this is a great one to make if you end up having them over for supper.

This recipe can also be adapted well for pork or chicken – and you better believe that I’ve already done both of those! Maybe it’s the Canadian in me that thinks gravy and cheese on everything sounds completely normal, but I guarantee once you try this simple steak recipe, you’ll see things my way.

How to Make French Onion Steak

Place half of coconut oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add onions and saute for 3-4 minutes until translucent, then add 1/2 cup broth and the vinegar.
Continue cooking for about 10 minutes until onions absorb all liquid.
Meanwhile, season the steaks with salt, pepper and optional herbs de Provence.
Remove onions from skillet and add remaining oil and butter.
Cook steaks for 4 minutes per side, until well browned. Add the onions back to the pan.
Stir arrowroot powder into remaining broth and add to pan.
Continue cooking until the liquid is reduced by half and turns into a thick gravy.

Add one slice of mozzarella cheese (or 1/4 cup shredded) to each steak. (If it doesn’t melt easily, place a lid on the skillet to assist.)
