Beach Sand Slime Recipe

Anyone else have a child who always brings half of the beach home with them?

Whether we’re going to the lake or coming home from vacation, I am guaranteed to find a bag or bottle of sand and seashells hidden in with Ella’s beach toys.

While I’m okay with a reasonable amount of “souvenir sand bottles,” there comes a point when the sand just needs to be gotten rid of. We’ve done a handful of crafts, but I think my favorite way to use up beach sand is making homemade sand slime!

You can use beach sand, playbox sand, or even craft sand to make this squishy, textured slime. Craft sand has the smoothest texture, but I love the gritty, squishy texture of the beach sand we made:

While you could incorporate other beach elements – sponge, seashells, etc – into this slime, I think it would take away from the soft, squishy nature of this easy sand slime. However, you could try using different colors of craft sand, a mixture of craft sand and regular sand – there are still a lot of ways to customize this sand slime.

You can also use it for making “sand shapes” with cookie cutters or break out the sand toys!

This slime can be made two ways – fluffy or just stretchy. I’ve included the recipe for the fluffy version below but feel free to leave out the shaving cream (and possibly reduce the contact solution) to make it just stretchy.

Ingredients for Sand Slime

• Glue <– use white school glue or clear craft glue, do NOT use off-brand glue
• Shaving cream
• Contact solution <– this is the brand we use, it must contain boric acid to work as a slime activator
• Sand, as needed <– can use craft slime, sandbox sand or sand from the beach!

Tip: craft sand is cleaner and prettier than beach or sandbox sand, but this recipe works with both. You can leave out the shaving cream if you want a less fluffy slime.

How to Make Sand Slime

Combine the glue and sand until you reach a saturation level you like.

Add in the shaving cream and mix until fully incorporated.

Add in the contact solution and stir until slime forms a dough-like texture.

Knead the slime for 2 minutes, adding more contact solution as needed to reduce stickiness.
