Onion Soup Recipe
There are certain foods we all crave when the weather gets cold or we’re feeling a little bit “under the weather” ourselves.
For me those foods are butter chicken, peaches and cream oatmeal and onion soup broth.
A weird combo, definitely, but they always make me feel better and warm me up when blankets or turning up the thermostat just aren’t doing it.
The last thing anyone wants to do when they aren’t feeling their best or just wants a quick hit of comfort food is to spend time slaving away at the stove. A traditional onion soup requires caramelizing onions (easily 10 minutes on it’s own) and using that as a base to make a beef broth-based soup.
This quick and easy onion soup relies on my homemade onion soup mix. I whip up a giant batch every couple of months and then just use a tablespoon whenever I feel the need for a quick cup of onion soup. I usually add ramen to mine, while my daughter is a fan of sprinkling in a few salad croutons.
The tangy, acidity of the onion soup mix combines wonderfully with the umami flavor of the beef broth to make a comforting and flavorful bowl of soup that has actually been proven to have anti-inflammatory properties, helping you actually fight cold and flu symptoms. (I guess there is a reason my body craves it when I’m sick after all!)
What is onion soup made with? Our onion soup mix is made with a variety of common seasonings: dried onion, parsley, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, tumeric, salt, white pepper and celery seed. We combine the onion soup mix with beef broth to make onion soup whenever we need.
Should I add bouillon powder? You can add beef bouillon to the onion soup mix if you’d prefer to be able to just add hot water to make the onion soup. Try to opt for a low-sodium beef bouillon so that you can have more control over the final flavor of your onion soup.
