I am a dedicated summer person.

I love the heat, the long days soaking up the sun at the beach, the sundresses, and the Birkenstocks.

(Not to mention the lack of shovelling snow or clearing off cars and the plethora of Vitamin D.)

The only things that make up for the cool arrival of fall is the countdown to Halloween (our family’s favorite holiday) and football tailgating.

We are a football family, full of players, coaches, and dedicated fans. My grandfather’s house was lined with pictures of him with the players he coached and my dad even brought his statue of Joe Namath with us through our multiple military moves in my childhood.

We don’t watch every game, but when we do watch – it’s a production. I make lots of indulgent and yummy appetizers, the whole family gathers around, and the kids even get in on the action with a game of touch football in the backyard (the grown ups join on commercial breaks).

These Honey Garlic Smokies are sweet and smoky, with just the right amount of salty to bring out that delicious sweet garlic flavor. You can make the sauce in the crockpot on high, but I find it a bit faster to just whip it up in a saucepan and then throw everything into the crockpot to warm up.

This crockpot sausage recipe is perfect for making at home and then bringing with you in an insulated container, or using a portable Crockpot (game-changer). I’m never lucky enough to have any leftovers of these, no matter how many times I double or triple the recipe – but if you manage to have extras, they would be an awesome lunch box addition, too!

Ingredients for Crockpot Honey Garlic Smokies

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 Tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3-4 Tablespoons garlic, minced
  • 1-28 oz package Smokies

Tip: double, triple or quadruple this recipe to serve your party size. This one made about 30-40 appetizer-sized smokies.

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful

  • Crockpot
  • Crockpot Liners <– I haven’t used these but I have several friends who SWEAR by these for easy clean up
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Toothpicks, for serving

This is the crockpot that I use the most often – it has a thermoshield which not only prevents little fingers from being burned if the kids touch the outside of the crockpot, but it’s also great for bringing along to potlucks. I also like that I can set the cook time on it, so if we end up taking too long playing outside (or running errands) I don’t have to worry about the food burning.

How to Make Honey Garlic Smokies

Place the brown sugar, honey, ketchup, soy sauce and garlic in a saucepan.

Stir over medium heat for 5 minutes, until a consistent sauce forms.

Place your smokies in a slow cooker and pour the sauce over them.

Cover and heat on low for 1 hour.
