5 Peanut Butter Smoothie Recipes

My family loves breakfast smoothies and smoothie bowls. I didn’t grow up eating breakfast so some mornings the thought of eating anything before noon is the least appetizing idea ever. On those mornings, smoothies are a great solution to give me that nutritional boost without feeling overwhelmed.

5 delicious peanut butter & yogurt-based smoothies - a Sundae smoothie, an Elvis smoothie, a berry green smoothie, a strawberry PB&J smoothie, and even an iced coffee smoothie! Easy smoothie recipes that can be whipped together in just a couple minutes and are better for you.

For the kids, I can pack their smoothies full of delicious & nutritious ingredients – sometimes ingredients they would otherwise refuse to eat, or would take an hour to eat! Blending a handful of greens into a berry-tasting smoothie is a great way to sneak the vegetables past them and know that they’ve started their day with a nutritional boost, so no matter what the day brings, I can feel good about that.

With smoothies, you either combine flavours to make delicious combinations (as with our PB & J Smoothie below) or you use delicious “hero” ingredients to make other ingredients undetectable, or at least more palatable (ahem, Berry Green Peanut Butter Smoothie).

This is why it’s so important to pick main ingredients that taste great on their own – and feel free to check around, especially if you’ve tried smoothies before and have not enjoyed them. It’s possible smoothies aren’t your thing – but I am tempted to suggest that you just haven’t met the right smoothie (or the right ingredients) yet.

In addition to picking quality ingredients being essential for a great smoothie, the blender makes a huge difference! Even if you can’t afford an expensive blender, you want one that will smoothly blend the ingredients — chunky is the opposite of smooth-ie! (I couldn’t resist.)

Most of the smoothie recipes that I’m about to share with you contain 2 Tablespoons of peanut butter and 1 cup of greek yogurt (a full serving of each) – providing you with 18g of protein in a convenient & delicious snack. All of the recipes except #1 are gluten-free, too.

These 5 peanut butter and yogurt-based smoothies look delicious - much better than some other smoothie recipes I've tried and thrown out before finishing

PB & J Smoothie

This smoothie tastes just like the lunch time classic! With cooked oatmeal adding some extra fibre and real strawberries taking the place of the jam, you can feel good about this crowd-pleasing smoothie.

This is a great way to use up some extra oatmeal – or, plan ahead by cooking a filling breakfast of oatmeal and saving 1/2 cup for snack time smoothies.

To make a PB & J Smoothie, blend the following ingredients together:

  • 1 cup greek yogurt
  • 1 Tablespoon peanut butter
  • 1 cup strawberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1/2 cup cooked oatmeal, cooled

Tip: if you’re making this smoothie shortly after cooking your oatmeal, stick the oatmeal in the freezer while you are preparing the other ingredients to help it cool down faster.

The Elvis smoothie - caramelized bananas, honey, peanut butter, and yogurt for a delicious smoothie that tastes just like the King's favourite sandwich

“The Elvis”

Another sandwich-inspired recipe, this smoothie takes it’s inspiration from the king of rock’n’roll’s childhood favourite (a fried sandwich containing peanut butter and banana, usually honey and sometimes bacon). While I’m sure some bacon crumble would be delicious on this smoothie, we skipped it for this round. (And I also made one of the sandwiches for the kids to split alongside their smoothies.)

This smoothie tastes just like the King’s favourite, and if you had a few extra minutes you could caramelize the bananas first to get an even more authentic taste. Not too sweet, it is the perfect banana-PB smoothie.

To make a “the King’s Smoothie,” combine:

  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 Tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 banana, preferably frozen
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon, optional

Start off by blending the yogurt, peanut butter, banana, and honey together before tasting and adjusting the sweetness. Add the cinnamon, if desired, and then pour into your serving glasses.

To add a strawberry to the top, simply cut a slit halfway up the strawberry and slide it onto the glass.

Berry Green Peanut Butter Smoothie

This smoothie changes everything. If you’ve had to suffer through a bad green smoothie before – this is the green smoothie to redeem them all. Containing 2 packed cups of spinach, this smoothie tastes like a peanut butter-banana milkshake from a classic 50s-style diner and it has the exact same texture.

If you’re serving it to fussy eaters, you may want to serve it in a tinted & lidded cup – but I guarantee you, they won’t taste anything “green” about it!

How to make a berry green smoothie with peanut butter

To make a Berry Green Peanut Butter Smoothie, combine:

  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1 banana, preferably frozen
  • 2 Tablespoons peanut butter
  • 2 cups fresh spinach, packed
  • 1 banana, preferably frozen
  • 1/2 cup mixed berries, fresh or frozen
  • 1/2 cup milk, approximately

Really pack the spinach into your measuring cup for this recipe! Do you see that giant pile of spinach in the ingredient picture? ALL of that spinach ended up in a single cup of this smoothie.

When blending, add just a couple tablespoons of the milk at a time to help the ingredients blend together (as they will need a bit of liquid to actually blend). I tend to add around a half cup, but add more or less depending on your preference.

This recipe tastes great fresh, but I’ve also made it the night before and left it covered in the fridge and it’s still delicious, thick and creamy when I enjoy it the next day.

Oh my gosh - this chocolate peanut butter smoothie looks delicious and a better choice than a chocolate milkshake. This would be fun to make for the kids on a special movie or game night

Chocolate Peanut Butter Sundae Smoothie

This smoothie is a great way to feel indulged while still making nutritious choices. To make them really special, I like to let the kids decorate their chocolate peanut butter smoothies with chocolate chips, syrup, sprinkles, coconut shreds, cherries – even a dollop of whipped cream!

These would be great for a special movie night or games night – and the kids won’t get as hopped up on sugar as they would if you served chocolate milkshakes!

My daughter specifically requested that hers be made without banana, so I made one with a frozen banana and one without. Both were delicious so go with your preference on that ingredient.

A great alternative to a chocolate milkshake, this chocolate peanut butter milkshake would be such a hit at any kids' party or get-together

Combine:

  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 Tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 banana, optional

Blend the ingredients together until smooth and then pour half of the recipe into your serving glass.

Add 1 Tablespoon of cocoa powder to the smoothie remaining in the blender and puree. Top the serving glass with the chocolate-peanut butter smoothie.

To top ours, we melted a bit of the peanut butter and drizzled it over the smoothie, along with some chocolate sundae sauce, and then topped the whole thing with some sprinkles and half a strawberry.

Iced Coffee PB Smoothie

I’m going to be completely honest on this one – while my mom loved it, I was not a fan. While I love all of these things together – I didn’t enjoy them all in the same glass.

She said it was like having a peanut butter frappuccino, so if that sounds like something you would enjoy, go for it!

How to make a peanut butter iced coffee

Combine in a blender:

  • 1 1/2 cups cold coffee
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 2 Tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup ice

Pour into a mug or mason jar and serve with a straw.
