Chicken Nuggets are a mealtime staple for most families, so I set out to make the Best Homemade Crispiest Chicken Nuggets from scratch!

Homemade Chicken Nuggets Recipe

Sitting down for breakfast and supper as a family is incredibly important to me.

There are so many studies that prove how beneficial this is for kids’ brains, their self-esteem, and for the family’s relationships, yet there are so many things that can sabotage it.

Committing to eating supper at home as often as possible ensures that we are eating balanced meals, saving money, and connecting as a family.

Friday nights are a bit busier now with Ella’s extra-curricular schedule, but we still have about an hour and a half to make supper and eat it as a family before we have to head back out the door again, so I thought I’d experiment with something a bit fun and exciting last Friday…

THE BEST EVER, CRISPIEST CHICKEN NUGGETS!

Can you feel the excitement?!

I’ve been playing around with chicken nugget recipes for awhile now, but I think this one may just be my best ever.

Not only are they juicy and flavorful, they are the crispiest chicken nuggets – your kids will think they came straight from the drive-thru!

The secret ingredient to the crispiest chicken? Argo® Corn Starch. It creates that gorgeous, audibly crunchy and beautifully browned exterior while sealing in the juices of the chicken, for the crispiest chicken with an airy texture.

Argo® Corn Starch is the leading corn starch brand with over 100 years of quality and trust over multiple generations and it’s naturally gluten free.

There are so many other uses for Argo® Corn Starch, from thickening gravies and sauces to binding baked goods together to crisping meats and veggies, especially in Asian cooking. Check out more ideas here.

I paired our crispy chicken nuggets with a delicious homemade sauce that tastes like the best honey mustard dip you’ve ever tasted. Just trust me on this one.

I’ve kept this recipe pretty straightforward, with no brining the chicken or too many additional ingredients but there are so many ways to change up this recipe once you’ve decided it’s a family favorite:

  • substitute one tablespoon of the flour for powdered icing sugar for a hint of sweetness
  • brine the chicken overnight in milk or pickle juice for even juicier results
  • swap out the seasoning for your desired seasoning mix
  • skip the baking and just pan fry these nuggets to golden perfection
  • add some bread crumbs for another dimension of crunch

Homemade Chicken Nugget Ingredients

  • 4 chicken breasts
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups Argo® Corn Starch
  • 1 Tablespoon taco seasoning, or more
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 3-4 eggs
  • 1 cup Mazola® Corn Oil

Makes 45 chicken nuggets.

Tip: for even more epic chicken nuggets, you may want to soak the chicken nuggets overnight in milk or pickle juice and substitute one tablespoon of the flour mixture with powdered icing sugar.

For the homemade dipping sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 Tablespoons honey
  • 1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons dijon mustard
  • 3 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful

  • Meat mallet or rolling pin
  • Parchment paper
  • Cutting board
  • Kitchen shears or sharp knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Medium-sized bowls
  • Large skillet
  • Cookie sheets
  • Fork
  • Tongs

How to Make Crispy Chicken Nuggets

First, assemble your ingredients.

Place one chicken breast on a cutting board and cover with parchment paper.

Use a meat mallet or rolling pin to flatten the chicken, hitting hard, until the chicken is less than 1″ thick. (If possible.)

Remove the parchment paper and use kitchen shears to cut the chicken into 2″ pieces, just slightly smaller than you want the final chicken nuggets to be.

Set aside.

In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the flour, Argo® Corn Starch and seasonings.

In a second bowl, add the eggs and beat. (I did two eggs at a time to avoid them getting too messy.)

One at a time, dip the chicken pieces in the dry mixture, then the egg mixture, then back in the dry mixture, coating completely each time.

Set the double-coated chicken pieces on a clean surface and repeat with all chicken pieces.

Place the oil in a skillet and heat over medium heat. (You may want to add only half the oil and do this is batches.)

Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.

Once the oil is hot, place the chicken nuggets in the skillet about 1″ apart from each other and fry for 2 minutes on each side, until golden.

Once the nuggets are lightly golden, remove to the prepared baking sheets.

Preheat oven to 400ºF and bake each sheet for 15-20 minutes, turning once halfway through the cooking time.

Cook the chicken nuggets until they reach a minimum internal temperature of 165ºF.

While the chicken nuggets are baking (or cooling), whisk together the sauce ingredients.

Taste and adjust the quantities of the ingredients to your personal preferences.

Serve the chicken nuggets with the homemade dipping sauce and prepare for everyone to be incredulous that these crispy chicken nuggets are in fact HOMEMADE!
