Everything Bagel Chicken Recipe
Homemade shake and bake chicken is a go-to classic recipe for me when chicken drumsticks are on sale… because you know that I’m not about to pay $4-6 for a chicken breast in this currently inflated state of grocery prices.
Thankfully, my child thinks anything with Everything but the Bagel seasoning is cutting edge gastronomy so adding a sprinkle of it to our homemade shake and bake mix is an easy way to update this vintage recipe to a family favorite fitting for the 21st century.
Everything but the bagel chicken legs are crispy, crunchy and have all of the sweet, tangy and savoury flavors of EBTB seasoning coating juicy, tender chicken legs that are baked to golden perfection.
These Everything Bagel Chicken Legs are crunchy, juicy and flavorful, making them an easy weeknight option that pair perfectly with a variety of sides!

Homemade Everything Bagel Chicken Variations:
- use chicken breasts or boneless thighs, then top the baked chicken with tomato sauce and shredded cheese and bake just until the cheese melts for a quick chicken parmesan
- can use on pork chops
- can use a different cut of chicken, though I think one of the best things about shake and bake chicken is that it makes great use of one of the cheapest cuts of chicken you can buy
- swap out seasonings (give examples – BBQ, buffalo, ranch)
- for a bit of sweetness, add a couple teaspoons of brown sugar to the breading mixture
- use finely crushed pretzels in place of the Panko breadcrumbs
- use regular breadcrumbs for a finer crumb (and lower price tag)
How to cook everything bagel chicken in the air fryer: Instead of baking, you can cook the chicken at 375F for 14-16 minutes in the air fryer.
How to prevent overcooked chicken: The easiest way to ensure that chicken is cooked properly is to use a meat thermometer and insert it in the thickest part of the chicken, avoiding hitting touching the drumstick bone. Chicken is fully cooked when the meat thermometer reads 165F.
How to store leftover everything chicken: Leftover chicken legs can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or frozen in an airtight freezer container for up to 3 months. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.)

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful
- Measuring Cups and Spoons
- Shallow Bowls

- Meat Thermometer <– This is the meat thermometer I have been using for the past 6 years – I’ve never had to change a battery and it’s super sturdy and reliable. It was a bit pricey, but unlike the $15 models that you can buy, this one isn’t going to need replacement. It is waterproof and comes with a two-year warranty. (Thermoworks also has a $15 pocket-sized model if you want to try that out first before investing in the MK4.)
