A decadent Cookies and Cream Cake easy enough to make with the kids, but scrumptious enough for a special occasion, this OREO Poke Cake is a must-try recipe for an OREO fan.

OREO Poke Cake Recipe
Our easy OREO poke cake recipe takes a simple boxed chocolate cake and transforms it into a layered dessert that tastes like it came straight from a bakery kitchen.
The warm chocolate cake absorbs the cookies and cream pudding, creating pockets of silky, creamy filling, while the soft and cloud-like Cool Whip topping adds sweetness and balances out the richness of the cake and pudding. The crushed OREOs on top adds a contrast of crunch and ties all of the flavors together.
Also, I feel like it needs to be said that I hate soggy cake (when ice cream is served with cake, I have to have it in a separate bowl) so rest assured that although we add pudding to the cake, it doesn’t make it soggy – just rich and moist.
While this cake is super simple and easy to make with minimal ingredients, it doesn’t taste boring or basic. It’s rich, lush and chocolatey and would definitely be the perfect dessert for a special occasion, while being easy enough to whip up on a busy weekend.
It’s an easy cake to make with the kids and it travels well – making it great for bringing along to parties, potlucks or tailgates.
OREO Poke Cake Variations:
- Add chopped OREOs to the cake batter or use OREO cake mix
- Swap out the whipped cream topping for a homemade frosting
- Swap out the pudding for marshmallow fluff (or pipe some marshmallow fluff into the holes) for a twist on a Ding-Dong or Hostess Cupcake
- Use white chocolate pudding or vanilla pudding if you can’t find the OREO pudding mix (and optionally add some crushed OREOs to the pudding)
- Use a flavored OREO and then swap out the pudding flavor to match, or add a few drops of flavor extract to the cake mix

Can I freeze this OREO Poke Cake? Yes, you can freeze it before adding the Cool Whip topping. Once fully chilled and set, wrap tightly and freeze for up to 1 month. Add whipped topping and OREOs after thawing.
Can I use real whipped cream instead of Cool Whip? Fresh whipped cream is made with dairy and doesn’t contain the same stabilizers as whipped toppings like Cool Whip, so it will become liquid and melty after a few hours. Because the whipped topping is oil-based and hydrogenated, it stays fluffy. You can use a frosting or other brand of stabilized whipped topping in place of the Cool Whip.
How to store OREO Poke Cake: Store in a covered airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. I recommend waiting to add the OREOs until just before ready to serve to prevent the cookies from becoming soft.
How to make OREO Poke Cupcakes: Bake the batter as cupcakes, poke 2-3 holes in each, and spoon in pudding before topping with whipped topping and crushed OREOs.
