Apple Butter Pie Recipe
When it comes to which pie to make for the holidays, my family can never agree!
Pecan pie, pumpkin pie, apple pie – everyone has their preference and someone is going to be disappointed if their favorite isn’t the one that ends up being served at the end of the meal.
While I usually make two pies, that still leaves one out! And call me stubborn, but when I’m already making lasagna, a turkey, possibly a ham, homemade dinner rolls, and about fifty side dishes (give or take), I’m not about to make three from-scratch pies to top it all off.
This year, I’ve decided on this decadent apple butter pie and a pecan pie. The apple butter pie is perfect for appeasing the pumpkin pie and apple pie fans by combining the velvety, smooth texture of pumpkin pie with the vibrant, caramelized apple flavor of apple pie. With just six ingredients and no need to cook the pie filling before it’s baked, this apple butter pie is extremely low maintenance, so it won’t be a hassle on a day when you’re already prepping so many other dishes.
For our test recipe, I used pre-made pie shells but the foolproof pie crust in my original apple pie recipe would be perfect if you don’t mind the extra task and time.
Top this pie with whipped cream, vanilla-cinnamon frosting, candied pecans or pie crust cookies for a real showstopper of a dessert.
Can you freeze apple butter pie? Yes! The creamy, custard-based filling used for this apple butter pie allows it to freeze beautifully. Bake the pie as directed and allow it to cool completely (as freezing a warm pie can cause ice to build up.) Wrap the pie with plastic wrap (or your preferred plastic wrap alternative) and place in a freezer bag or your favorite freezer container. (This set of freezer containers is a crazy bargain.)
At least 12 hours (preferably a day) before you want to serve the pie, remove it from the freezer and place in the fridge to thaw. You can heat it up in the microwave or oven before serving if you like it warm – but ensure it is fully thawed before re-heating.
