Raspberry Moonshine Recipe

Okay, so let’s just get this out of the way: this is not real moonshine.

This is a homemade flavored vodka recipe. Real moonshine is made from corn meal, sugar, yeast, and water and tastes like a mix between whiskey and tequila. It’s also illegal to make in most parts of North America, so I won’t be making the real stuff anytime soon!

Instead, this recipe is a fun way to flavor and color plain store-bought vodka to create a delicious Raspberry Donut flavor with a pretty shimmer. If you don’t like vodka, you can alternatively use any other clear spirit – they even sell moonshine in stores now so you can use the real stuff as the base for this recipe.

This Shimmery Raspberry Vodka is a fun homemade gift idea and is perfect for breaking out at parties or late-night get-togethers.

We used really strong (80-proof/40%) vodka so this is best for mixing or using for shots (even then, it’s pretty potent). You can use a lower proof alcohol for a more sippable vodka experience.

This recipe takes at least a week to really develop that vibrant color and flavor, so be sure to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time before you want to drink or gift this homemade flavored vodka!

Tip: I often order my liquor from Drizly because they have a quick delivery time (sometimes within 40 minutes) and no expensive mark-ups. Purchasing from them supports local retailers, too. You can order the vodka needed for this recipe from them.

Tip: most “moonshine hack” recipes use Everclear, which is stronger and preferable for mixing (as the other ingredients in this recipe reduce the amount of alcohol per shot).

How to Make Raspberry Jelly Donut Vodka

Place sugar and water in a pan over medium heat and reduce until the liquid is halved. It will have a syrup-like consistency.

Divide the simple syrup and raspberries equally into the jars – you may want to add less syrup than indicated here (1/4 cup each jar) depending on your personal preferences. (You could also store the additional simple syrup separately and then add to the completed moonshine, to taste.)

Top each mason jar with vodka.

Place your mason jars in a fridge with the lid slightly open for up to two weeks. The raspberries will have lost their red color, but the vodka will be bright red.

After two weeks, remove the fruit by straining through the cheesecloth into a large measuring cup or bowl.

Pour the moonshine back into the jars and add the edible shimmer and vanilla to your personal preference.

Shake well before serving to redistribute the shimmer.

  1. Was reading the recipe for the Raspberry Jelly Donut Moonshine. This is very misleading and potentionally dangerous. First, it was said to use 80 proof Vodka. They then said that was rather potent and you could use a less potent Vodka such as 40%. Sorry, but 80 proof and 40% are the same thing. 80 proof liquor is in fact 40% alcohol. Now, they mentioned Everclear. That is dangerous as Everclear is nearly straight grain Alcohol, 190 proof or 95% alcohol. Everclear is NOT vodka. There is one other that I am aware of in the same category as Everclear and that is Pharmco. Vodka comes two ways, 100 Proof which is 50% alcohol and 80 Proof which is 40% alcohol. There may still be some 86 proof around, but I haven’t seen it. That would be 43% alcohol.
