DIY Purple and White Diaper Cake

I have this sixth sense where I can always tell when someone is pregnant – often before they even know themselves!

I’ve started not mentioning it to people after a couple times of knowing before the mom, but I sometimes make the mistake of mentioning it to my daughter – who isn’t as good at keeping her lips sealed!

Recently, we had a visit with a close friend of mine who my daughter refers to as “Aunt Lisa.” I knew immediately that she was pregnant and waited until the car ride home to say anything to Ella.

The next day, Ella called Aunt Lisa and got straight to the point – asking point blank if she was pregnant… and we got a confused no!

But by our next visit? Aunt Lisa knew what I had known for awhile – that baby #2 was on the way!

Since this is a second baby, there will be no baby shower, but Ella and I wanted to do something super fun and special to celebrate Aunt Lisa, so we stopped at Target on the way home and picked up some supplies to make a DIY Diaper Cake.

Materials for a DIY Diaper Cake

We purchased everything we needed for this DIY Diaper Cake from Target, including:

  • JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Wash
  • JOHNSON’S® Sleepytime Baby Gift Set
  • 40-70 diapers (we used 55)
  • More rubber bands than you have diapers – at least two LARGE bands
  • Two different sized cake pans
  • Large plastic platter, optional
  • Ribbon
  • Artificial Flowers
  • Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun
  • Two wooden dowels

You can hover your mouse over the image below and click through to purchase these products directly from Target! However, my daughter enjoyed getting to check out all of the different craft supplies to create a pretty color scheme for “her” diaper cake. We first picked up the purple JOHNSON’S® products, then the white diapers, and our theme flowed from there. It was easy and stress-free being able to pick everything up at Target so we were able to focus on the new baby excitement and planning our awesome gift!

I was excited to work with JOHNSON’S® after they told me about how they listened to parents from around the world and reformulated their products.

These newly reformulated JOHNSON’S® products contain no parabens, no phthalates, and are hypoallergenic – which is important to me and many new moms. They are also free of dyes and sulfates and are more naturally derived with 50% fewer ingredients than before.

Until 9/1, Buy 3 JOHNSON’S® products and get a $5 gift card instantly redeemable in-store and on Target.com

(PS – I didn’t realize she had found some gum before we started filming until we were past the first step – so please excuse the open mouth gum chewing for the first two minutes…)

How to Make a Diaper Cake

First, you will need to roll up all of your diapers.

Roll the diapers from the waistband in, and then secure the tightly rolled diaper with a rubber band.

Repeat… repeat… repeat.

Insert your rolled diapers standing up into your two cake pans. Secure a large rubber band over the diapers and remove as a single layer from the cake pan.

Add additional rolled diapers to the bottom layer, as needed, to create a dramatic difference between the two layers.

Wrap the cake layers with ribbon – we used a large mesh ribbon that covered the height of the diapers, and then a thinner ribbon that covered up the rubber bands. Secure the ribbon with fabric glue, hot glue, or tape.

Place the smaller diaper cake tier on top of the bottom, larger tier. Insert the dowels to secure the layers.

Insert the flowers around the bottom of the top tier. Create a pattern if you wish.

Secure the JOHNSON’S® Sleepytime Baby Gift Set on the top of the cake, using ribbon or rubber bands to secure it to the dowels. Use extra flowers to cover the dowels.
