DIY Buzz Lightyear Ornament Craft

Normally, the only ornaments on the Christmas tree with wings are angels – but this year, Buzz Lightyear has earned a coveted spot on the Christmas tree, too!

Rather than make a straight-forward Buzz Lightyear ornament, I thought it would be fun to adapt the classic Mickey Head shape for our Buzz Lightyears, similar to all of the Mickey Head home decor ideas you see for sale at the Disney parks. There’s just something extra cute about combining a classic Disney character with the Mickey Head shape.

Our free printable craft template already has all of the designs and buttons for Buzz’s spacesuit, so you just have to print, cut, paste and add glitter (if you choose). The printable template makes the crafting process super straight-forward and easy, whether you are making these yourself or letting the kids make them.

You can also use these for cute homemade cards, make a few of the Mickey heads and make a bunting banner or even use them to cut out some adhesive vinyl for another Disney decor craft. I’d love to see any creative twists you make on this craft.

Tip: I like to laminate crafts like this so we can use them multiple times and don’t have to worry about them tearing.

This is the laminator I use, and I just buy the super cheap packages of laminate sheets from Amazon. It costs about 13 cents a sheet to laminate which lets us get so much use out of any activity we print out.

How to Make Buzz Lightyear Ornaments

Download and print out the Buzz Lightyear ornament template onto corresponding colored papers or cardstock.

Cut out the shapes and set aside.

Starting with Buzz’s wings, use craft glue to attach the purple and green wing pieces to the white wing base.

If you want to add some red glitter, place some craft glue to the diagonal stripes on the wings and the triangles on the green wing tips.

Shake some red glitter over the glue to coat completely, then shake off the excess glitter.

Set wings aside to dry.

(If you don’t want to use glitter, just use a red marker to add color to those spots.)

Next up, we’re working on Buzz’s main body. Glue the purple half circle onto the the top half of the white circle.

Glue on the green vest/breast plate and then the blue badge.

If using glitter, apply some craft glue to the buttons on Buzz’s vest.

Apply blue glitter to the leftmost button, green the centre button, and red to the right button and button on the right side of the ornament. Apple gold glitter to the stripe on the red side.

Shake off excess glitter. And set aside to dry.

Once all glitter is dry, glue the purple stripes and black oval to the main body, as shown.

Glue the green ear circles to the back of the Mickey head, leaving a finger-width distance between the two ears.

Glue the Mickey Head onto the Buzz Lightyear wings.

If laminating your ornaments, do that now.

Take a length of ribbon or string and form a loop. Glue or tape in place on the back of the ornament.

Wait til all of the glue has dried before hanging your Buzz Lightyear ornament.
