“Play is the work of the child,” is a famous quote by Maria Montessori and I have taken it to heart.

One of the best parts of being a parent and caregiver is getting to spend my days playing! And of course, there is no better way to learn than to play.

Play is the work of the child - Maria Montessori

When I started Sugar, Spice and Glitter, it was to chronicle our Montessori homeschooling journey. But as time has gone on and our family has changed, so has Sugar, Spice and Glitter. Ella attends school part-time and while I love Montessori and use it daily with the children in my home daycare, I am also starting to open up and use other methods of education.

Learning can also look like play, but I’ve kept this category mostly to Montessori lessons or activities that have a specific learning goal in mind rather than being completely open-ended. I especially love our science experiments and our kids’ kitchen activities.

Of the Montessori lessons, the Montessori Practical Life Lessons contributed by Beth Holley are the most popular.

From sensory play and homemade play dough, to invitations to play and homemade toys, we take fun seriously in this house!

Every week, I share at least one fun play-based idea that I’ve tried and tested with my group and I hope you’ll find inspiration and encouragement in them. I always love a challenge, so if there is a type of play or easy homemade toy you would like to see on Sugar, Spice and Glitter, please let me know.
