This fun Harry Potter Headband with a DIY Golden Snitch is a fun and easy craft for kids - or it makes a special gift for the Harry Potter fan in your life.

Harry Potter Headband

When we went to Universal Studios last summer, Ella was just too young to really get into Harry Potter.

Trying to watch the movie or read the book with her was too scary (starting with the snake-in-the-zoo scene), so instead of getting her excited for the parks with the books and movies, I used the parks to get her excited to read the books with me.

We had a blast at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and being physically immersed in that world helped grow her curiosity to immerse herself in the world via the books and her imagination. (A Harry Potter festival or event would probably have had a similar effect.)

We just got through Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and she is hooked! We’re going to give the movie another try this weekend, so fingers crossed!

To celebrate us finishing her first Harry Potter book, I made Ella this super simple Golden Snitch headband. (And since it was so quick to make, I also made some bobby pins to match.)

I lucked out with the timing for this craft because there are golden leaves and balls on sale everywhere right now in the lead-up to Christmas, but if you’re making this at another time of year, you can always use fabric paint to paint your leaves and a styrofoam ball (or order these golden fabric leaves typically used for corsages.)

There are so many uses for this DIY Golden Snitch, but our favorite is as a Harry Potter Ornament, or attaching to a Harry Potter Headband. Such a fun Harry Potter Christmas craft idea

Ways to Use Your DIY Golden Snitch

While I attached our golden snitches to headbands and bobby pins, you could:

  • use it to embellish a picture frame
  • attach to a notebook
  • top off a pencil
  • use as a party decoration
  • make into a necklace
  • use as a Christmas tree ornament
  • or just perch on your nightstand or bookcase as a fun piece of homemade decor

If you come up with another fun use for these DIY Golden Snitches, please be sure to let me know! (And maybe even tag me on social media so I can see it!)

Materials for a Harry Potter Headband

  • Plain headband
  • Hot glue and hot glue gun
  • Golden leaves
  • Golden ball
    • or, Styrofoam ball
    • Gold paint
    • Gold glitter
  • Jewelry wire, optional
  • Sealant

Tip: if the glitter is falling off of your golden snitch, sealant will help prevent that, but I advise giving it a full 24 hours to dry before wearing.

How to Make a Golden Snitch

Remove two golden leaves and one golden ball from your branches. (Try to select two leaves that are already connected, if possible.)

(If using a plain styrofoam ball or leaves, paint them gold and sprinkle on the glitter on to the wet paint. Let dry.)

Check to see if the glitter comes off when touched or shaken. If so, apply a thin coat of sealant to prevent the glitter from getting all over your hair and face. Let dry for 24 hours before progressing with the craft.

Attach the golden ball to the two leaves. Mine already had wire attached, so I wound those together and then secured with some strategic drops of hot glue.

You may need to use jewelry wire, poke a hole into your styrofoam ball with it, secure with hot glue and then wind around the leaves, and secure with glue again.

Shake it a bit to ensure that the ball and leaves are well-attached.

Next, glue the finished snitch to your headband. I also used some jewelry wire to wind around the snitch and headband, but I think it would have been fine without the additional wire (which you then need to cover with some ribbon to avoid it being uncomfortable) so I would advise just using a good-quality hot glue and calling it a day.

Let the glue dry completely. It is recommended to let it “cure” for up to 24 hours, but we didn’t have any issues with Ella wearing hers about 5 minutes after it dried.

Note: for an extra Harry Potter flourish, you can order a Harry Potter headband that corresponds to your house preference, or even wind ribbon in the two colors along the headband.
