Unicorn Hot Chocolate
A delicious unicorn drink for kids, this colorful Unicorn Hot Chocolate is a whimsical dessert that’s perfect for a Unicorn Birthday Party or a family movie night!
Unicorn Hot Chocolate Recipe
A sweet, creamy, and colorful hot chocolate recipe that comes with a big heaping of magic (and sprinkles).
This unicorn hot chocolate recipe is a whimsical treat for a cold winter day.
Our unicorn hot chocolate may look time-consuming and over-the-top but it’s super quick to whip together. Less than 5 minutes and you can have the most magical unicorn hot chocolate ever.
And don’t worry if you don’t have all of the ingredients that I used to decorate our hot chocolate – just raid the baking cupboard and see what works. (Of course, if you want to shop and plan ahead, I’ve included shoppable Amazon links in the recipe below.)
We used a white chocolate cocoa mix and added hot milk, but you can do a mix of hot water and milk, use a pre-made unicorn hot chocolate like this one, or even swap in your favorite hot chocolate recipe. (We have a yummy strawberry cream cheese hot chocolate recipe here that I call “pink velvet” that uses white chocolate chips in the recipe.)
There are so many occasions that I think this unicorn hot chocolate would be perfect for!
- Slumber parties
- Unicorn birthday party
- Family movie night
- To enjoy while reading fairy tales or Harry Potter (they have unicorns in the books)
- Fancy “tea party” on a cold day
- A sweet (not spooky) Halloween party
- A Sleeping Beauty party or movie night
You can even swap out the unicorn elements and call this a Sleeping Beauty hot chocolate, a fairy hot chocolate, etc etc.
But just serving this magical hot chocolate makes a special occasion! Ella and I just enjoyed it on a low-key Saturday night and she was pretty pumped! (About the hot chocolate anyways, she wasn’t too pleased that I insisted on taking pictures of everything before she got to dig in.)
If you do any cupcake decorating, I highly recommend looking into a simple fondant tool kit like this one. It has everything you need for letters, flowers and decorations like the unicorn ears and horn in this post. (The one I’m linking to also has a carrying case.)

How to Make Unicorn Hot Chocolate
If making your own unicorn ears and horns, shape a small piece of gumpaste or fondant into ovals with one slightly pointed end (to resemble the unicorn ear) and use a wet paintbrush to apply the edible shimmer for the “inner ear.”
I used a fondant tool to help shape it into an ear by tracing a light crease down the center and gathering the ends.
Next, roll the unicorn horn and shape one edge to a point.
Use that fondant tool or a toothpick to imprint a spiral all the way up the horn – kind of like a barbershop pole.
Use the edible shimmer or a gold colour mist to dye the horn gold. Set aside.
Melt your white chocolate or candy melts and apply a 1″ band of melted chocolate around the top of your serving glasses.
Sprinkle unicorn sprinkles into the white chocolate (you may want to place a bowl underneath to catch falling sprinkles).
Let the white chocolate dry as you prepare your hot chocolate.
Prepare your hot chocolate according to package directions, using hot milk in place of water preferably. Stir in food coloring.
Place your Cool Whip or other whipped topping in a bowl and stir in food coloring.
Top the hot chocolate with the colored whipped topping.
Add sprinkles, edible shimmer and mini marshmallows on top.
Next, grab your prepared unicorn ears and horn, and place the unicorn horn on top of the hot chocolate, leaning over the front so it doesn’t sink in and then place the ears on the sides.
Enjoy immediately.
