Queen of Hearts Party for Kids ⋆ Sugar, Spice and Glitter

A fun Disney party theme or a Valentine’s Day party for kids, today I’m sharing all of the details from our Queen of Hearts Party on a Budget!

Queen of Hearts Valentine’s Day Party

We love any excuse to go wild with a theme, whether it’s a birthday party, special occasion, or just a family movie night.

Last year, we had a Chalkboard and Love Bug-themed Valentine’s party for Ella and her friends and it was such a nice way to break up the winter doldrums, so when she asked to have another Valentine’s Day party this year, it was an easy yes for me!

All you need to throw an awesome party is a great attitude and a couple fun themed activities – everything else is bonus!

I refuse to spend too much money on these parties and this party ended up costing us about $35-40 in food, decor and craft supplies for a party activity (since we already had an indoor croquet set and owned the movie).

My first step with throwing these parties is to search the house for items that can be repurposed during the party – in this case, Alice figurines, playing cards, various tea cups and teapots, etc. You may be surprised at how much you already have that will work for decor and activities.

Below, I outlined all of the party food, decor and activities that went into our Queen of Hearts party and also linked to some other ideas that I found. I purposefully kept this party low-stress and simple – it’s just an excuse to get together with some friends and have some fun!

Queen of Hearts Party Food

Throwing the party after lunch or after supper allows you to just offer snack-style foods and drinks and not worry about timing the party around hunger pains. However, heart-shaped pizzas or finger sandwiches (the kind served with afternoon tea) would be a simple and quick addition to this party if you needed something more substantial.

Our Valentine’s Day Cheeseboard or a tray of cut fruit would also be a great addition to your party menu.

Since the Mad Hatter’s tea party in the book used a mish-mash of different place settings, I think it’s a great excuse to just mix and match all of your favorite serving platters for all of the food. We just used my unmatched collection of pretty tea cups and some floral plates to serve the food with, but you could alternatively grab this cute set of Wonderland-themed party supplies (themed cups, plates, etc).

Queen of Hearts Party Decor

I set the table with a simple black tablecloth and added a roll of gold mesh fabric as an impromptu table runner.

After adding all of the food and other decor items, I scattered fabric rose petals and playing cards in any empty space on the table.

To make the playing card garland, I used a hole punch to place two hole punches on the top corners of each playing card, about 1/2″ to 1″ from the corners. I threaded a long string through all of the cards, through the front and back out through the front. If you want to have a swoopy effect with your garland (like I did), you may need to use small pieces of tape along the back of the cards to secure the string in place and avoid the cards from sliding.

I love this Dali-style “melting clock” – it’s perfect for the party and we’d use it to decorate even after the party
Mushroom-themed hanging lanterns
This whimsical Wonderland-themed cupcake stand doubles as pretty party decor
Instead of standard playing cards, you could get these Jumbo Playing Cards and hang from the ceiling

Queen of Hearts Party Activities

We had so much fun with Alice in Wonderland-themed activities at this party, including a game of indoor croquet (this is the set we have) and musical chairs (just like the Mad Hatter and March Hare played with Alice in the movie).

Watching the movie is also a great low-key activity, and one of our favorite things to do at kids’ parties is have the children make a craft. It doubles as an activity and a replacement for junky goody bags. The kids love being able to bring a piece of the party home with them.

Other Queen of Hearts Party Activity Ideas:

Paint teapots or teacups
Pin the tail on the Cheshire Cat (or pin the smile)
Mad Hatter Hat Toss (place a large hat 5-10 feet away from the kids and see who can land a bean bag or ping pong ball in it)
Card games – there is even a vintage-looking set of Alice in Wonderland themed cards you can buy
Alice in Wonderland Ludo – this is basically a themed version of the game “Trouble” or “Sorry” just without the poppy dice thing in the middle
You can also set up a Wonderland-themed backdrop for pictures and add in some Alice-themed photo props
