This kid-friendly pea soup is an easy, healthy recipe that can be prepared from scratch in less than 15 minutes!

And, I know what some of you are thinking: kid-friendly pea soup, that’s an oxymoron.

But I can honestly tell you that I’ve served this to many kids, including my fair share of picky eaters, and they all have eaten it happily. (Some have even insisted on seconds.)

Easy Healthy Recipe for Pea Soup, a homemade pea soup recipe that the whole family will love! Swirled with a bit of butter and sprinkled with good quality sea salt, this pea soup is out of this world.

There’s two secrets to getting kids to eat pea soup:

  1. A delicious pea soup recipe. (This is it.)
  2. A fun attitude towards introducing the food.

Basically, it’s all about presentation, every step of the way.

I get the kids excited that we are going to eat green, I ask them what they think green will taste like, and we might even read Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham to get us pumped up to try it.

(Little Pea is also a cute book to read before eating pea soup!)

How to Make Pea Soup

First, you start with a delicious broth. I often make my own homemade chicken broth after we’ve cooked an whole chicken, or I stick to Home Goodness Organic Low-Sodium Chicken Broth from Costco. Pea soup has such a light flavour, and we need to watch sodium consumption in children anyways, so a low-sodium broth is essential.

I sautee two cloves of garlic and one or two shallots in a tablespoon of olive oil. (If I’m making it for new kids, I stick to one shallot — if you don’t have shallots, half of a sweet onion, or three green onion stalks will substitute.)

Once the shallot and garlic are translucent, I added in the broth and peas, and simmer for 20 minutes.

At this point, I add whatever seasoning – salt, pepper, basil, or nothing. Try to only add a seasoning that the kids have had before and like – one new flavour at a time!

Blend the whole thing up in a standard blender for one to two minutes until creamy & smooth. (Depending on your blender, you may need to cool the soup slightly before blending.) Add a bit more chicken stock to thin out the soup, if needed.

I find that the kids will eat this plain, but I like mine best with a small bit of melted butter on top and sprinkled with just a touch of good quality sea salt. (Pure gluttony, I know.) You could also offer a little bit of grated cheese or croutons, or even give your children a slice of toast to dip into the soup and eat like ketchup on french fries!

Make it fun, and you’ll be shocked at how much your kids will love this pea soup recipe!
