Handmade “I Love You This Much” Card Craft

I love all of the cute card ideas I see circulating over social media, but it sometimes drives me a bit crazy when you see ideas that are completely adult-made.

I always refuse to do the crafts for the kids in my daycare, or write poems on them. Personally, I don’t want a craft from my child’s teacher – I want a craft from my child, even if it is imperfect or much more simple than something her teacher could do.

This kid-made card idea is one that I’ve been doing with my daycare kids for years. Really young kids, I have to help them a bit more, but when they get to 6 or 7 years old, they can make this craft completely independently.

It’s always so cute seeing them present their cards to their parents – “reading” it out loud to them and emphasizing the “thiiiisss much.” You could probably glue a few strips of paper together to make an even bigger hand stretch.

I love how proud the kids are when they give their parents a craft that they actually made all by themselves. There’s a huge difference between how they feel about the crafts where they’ve put a lot of work into it, and the crafts where they were minimally involved – and that to me is key.

For even more cute handmade cards for Mother’s Day (or just because) check out this list from my friend, Stacey.

If you’re making this craft with your kids, it would be sweet to read “Guess How Much I Love You” or “I Love You, Forever” before or after you make the craft. (There is also a book called “I Love You This Much” but I haven’t read it so I can’t say whether or not it’s a good read.)

If you want to add something special to this card, I found a cute “I Love You This Much” pendant on Etsy that would be cute on necklaces or a keychain. (There are also some awesome options in our Mother-Daughter Jewelry post.)

Check out our quick video on how to make this sweet kid-made card and then scroll down below to grab the free printable directions.

(And before I get called out on my own hypocrisy, I did most of this craft video because my daughter ditched me halfway through the filming to go play outside with the neighbours and I needed to wrap it up while I still had sunlight for filming!)

Materials for Homemade Mother’s Day Card

  • Cardstock, any color <– I personally wouldn’t use construction paper as the craft may bend or rip easily
  • Scissors <– these are the ones we have and they have lasted for years in our daycare, and unlike some other safety scissors – they actually cut things!
  • Markers
  • Glue
  • Pencil

Tip: you can also use a painting or drawing that the kids have made in place of the cardstock for an even prettier and more personalized card.

How to Make an “I Love You This Much” Homemade Card

Select your color of cardstock and trace each of your child’s hands onto the cardstock, using pencil. (Pen or marker may dye their skin temporarily.)

Trim a 2-3″ width of cardstock from the bottom of the sheet.

Have your child cut out their handprints with safety scissors.

Older children can fold the strip of paper accordion-style (younger kids will need help).

Have your child write out “I love you” on one of the hands, then “this much” (or “thiiisss much” just like how they say it) on the accordian strip.

Glue the edges of the strip to the “insides” of the handprints.

Let dry before gifting or placing in an envelope.

  1. This is such an adorable idea. Thank you for the reading ideas as well. I Love You This Much is a great book. One of my other favorites is I Love You Like Crazy Cakes. I love that it features a multicultural and adoptive family.
