Copycat Strawberry Frappuccino Recipe

Ella’s favorite place to grab a to-go breakfast on road trips is Starbucks. This girl loves a Strawberry Frappuccino and Croissant Breakfast Sandwich – and who can blame her?!

I totally don’t mind a special treat occasionally, but on non-road trip days I prefer to skip the 52g of sugar and make our Strawberry Frappuccinos at home!

This super simple strawberry frappuccino contains no sugary syrups or artificial flavors. It’s a refreshing, icy cool treat bursting with fresh strawberry flavor and a subtle hint of vanilla.

You can top your pretty pink drink with our easy homemade vanilla whipped cream (recipe below) or for a fun, tropical take make our vegan Coconut Ice Cream recipe to top your frappuccino.

My “secret” for ensuring that this strawberry smoothie has an amazing strawberry flavor is using frozen strawberries.

Unlike a lot of strawberries that you find in produce departments, frozen strawberries are picked at the peak of freshness and flash frozen. They often have better flavor than fresh (grocery store) strawberries because the ones in the produce department are often picked before they are fully ripened so that they are still “fresh” by the time they can be transported to grocery stores.

You can alternatively visit a local strawberry farm and get fresh picked strawberries and freeze them yourself. I like using frozen strawberries, too, to remove the need for ice in this recipe which will inevitably water down the flavor.

Reader Questions:

Does a strawberry frappuccino have caffeine? No, most Starbucks frappuccinos do not contain caffeine. There are some that do (like their Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino) but the fruit-based ones do not contain caffeine. You can add some frozen coffee cubes or a shot of espresso if you’d like.

Can I freeze a frappuccino? Yes, you can freeze this recipe by pouring the fresh frappuccino into a freezer bag and freezing flat. When ready to enjoy, remove from the freezer and allow to soften for a couple minutes before pouring into a glass (or blending in a smoothie blender if large pieces still appear to be frozen).

My go-to version of this strawberry frappuccino (which I share below) is like a healthy strawberry smoothie and is completely sugar-free with the sweetness just coming from the strawberries and yogurt. However, we’ve also played around to make a more indulgent strawberry milkshake version that is a bit more akin to the Starbucks version.

For the Strawberry Milkshake version, you will need:

  • 1 cup ice
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup vanilla ice cream <– can use frozen vanilla yogurt
  • 3 tablespoon strawberry syrup (like Nesquick)
  • 3 strawberries hulled, optional
  • Whipped cream, optional

Blend all ingredients except the whipped cream until the ice is crushed, and then pour into a glass and top with whipped cream and additional strawberry syrup.

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful

How to Make Homemade Strawberry Syrup:

Heat the 1/2 cup strawberries in a small pan over medium heat, along with 1 cup of water. You are wanting to extract the flavour from the strawberries as much as possible. Stir frequently and cook until the water becomes thick with the strawberry juice – like a syrup. Remove from heat.

You can either puree the strawberry syrup or strain the strawberries using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth, and mash up the strawberries to extract as much juice as possible – if you get a lot more juice out of the strawberries, you may want to return the syrup to the heat until a thick viscosity returns. Set aside.

How to Make Vanilla Whipped Cream Topping:

To make the homemade whipped cream topping, place the heavy whipping cream in a bowl and beat with an electric mixer for 4 minutes, until soft peaks form.

Flavor to taste with sugar and vanilla extract.

How to Make a Homemade Strawberry Frappuccino:

Blend the remaining ingredients together in a blender. I start off by adding 1/2 cup of milk and increasing until I reach my desired consistency, just because the amount of water in the strawberries can vary each time you make this.

Optionally, you can add some ice cubes to the frappuccino, which is a great way to increase the water content of this drink.

Top with some homemade whipping cream (if desired) and drizzle on the homemade strawberry syrup.

  1. Both versions of this look really good. I am especially interested in the yogurt version. I usually eat greek yogurt with berries for breakfast, but it is getting kind of old. This would be a new version of the same thing!

  2. Yum yum yum, I’ve been wanting to give this a try! We don’t have a Starbucks near us so I keep seeing all these copycat recipes and this one caught my eye. You recipe seems so simple and tasty, I can’t wait to try! I’d love for you to come link up with us tonight at 6pm cst at Throwback Thursdays link party!

    1. Hi Amanda,
Actually, Starbucks doesn’t put any caffeine or coffee in their Strawberry Frappuccinos: https://www.starbucks.com/menu/product/2122724/iced?parent=%2Fdrinks%2Ffrappuccino-blended-beverages%2Fcreme-frappuccino
However, if you wanted to add coffee to this, you could try replacing half the milk with coffee, or half of the frozen strawberries with frozen coffee cubes.
We also have this Bailey’s Frappuccino (you can omit the Bailey’s or replace with your favorite milk or creamer) –> https://sugarspiceandglitter.com/frozen-baileys-coffee-cocktail/

  3. I just ordered strawberry frappuccino which is very disaapointed because taste like yuck! I saw the guy made he only put strawbbey syrup, sugar, milk, and ice. he add the ice after he mixed engredients mentioned. then the whipped cream on top was flap is not thick look like a melted ice cream! so when it look up the original flavor of sturbucks is different of what he made. located at LRH starbucks!

  4. I absolutely love that this is a healthier variant of the scrumptious drink – all the flavour minus the overwhelmingly high dose of added sugar! Great tip to use frozen strawberries! You’re absolutely right, fresh ones too often taste less.
