If you’re new to Sugar, Spice & Glitter something that you may not realize is that for three years my daughter was basically sick every other week.
She literally had 56 documented-at-the-doctor’s instances of strep throat or ear infections before she finally had surgery removing her adenoids and tonsils. Life was chaotic, I was always in recovery or catch-up mode.
I had to think outside the box a lot to come up with solutions to make our life work, but one thing that was just always a disaster was grocery shopping.
Taking a sick kid grocery shopping is basically self-inflicted torture – for both of you!
She’d be whiny, uncomfortable, and either demand everything in sight or freak out with every addition to the grocery cart. The poor girl belonged at home with a blanket, and her mean mom was dragging her out for sustenance. (The picture below about sums up the experience of shopping with a sick kid – pajamas and bribes!)
(And the worst was if someone made a comment about her attitude. I’d either ignore it or let them know that she was sick – and open myself up to a whole other level of judgement for dragging my sick kid out of her cozy house… If I waited until she wasn’t sick, we’d never buy groceries!)
I attempted to have my dad go grocery shopping for us once… and let’s just say nothing on the list was purchased and Ella was thrilled with the sugary options that made their way home.
Now that she’s older, she’s sick less often but grocery shopping is still something that can be hard to fit into our busy weeks. Right now she has six extra-curricular activities on the go and I still enforce an early bedtime – and there’s no way I want to deal with a cranky kid to make a 7am grocery shop work! (I’d probably have to drag her out of the house in her pajamas.)
So when Walmart reached out to me to let me know that they are rolling out their Walmart Online Grocery Pickup at even more locations, I was excited to give it a try. Not only would it be easier for us with our schedule limitations, it would also help me stick to my budget and avoid impulse purchases (or bribery purchases if shopping with my daughter).
We set up our first Online Grocery Pickup for a busy Saturday morning filled with swim practice and lunch with the grandparents – and my mom wanted to try it out, too!
After Ella was in bed, I made a cup of tea and went online to see what was on sale that week, figured out our meal plan, then selected all the items I wanted. I then selected the time I wanted to pick up (you pick one hour time frames) and paid for the order with a combination of credit card and my $10 off promo code (grab it below).
My favorite part about their Online Grocery Pick-up was probably that it wasn’t just limited to grocery items. I could add items from nearly every department in the store, including items we needed for a school project and a birthday gift for a friend.
I was also pleasantly surprised to read “If the price changes between placing the order and pickup, we’ll give you the lowest price.” (This way you don’t have to worry about being two days late or two days early for a sale!)
My mom and I picked the same time frame and just clicked the link that was sent to our cell phones when we were en route to the store. I loved being able to notify them when we were on the way rather than calling when we arrived because it allowed them to be ready with our order when we got there. There is special parking on the side of the building for the Online Pickup Service as well.
The Walmart associate showed me my receipt and let me know how much I was charged for the items that needed to be weighed. If an item wasn’t available, he would have gone over that at the time, as well. He let me check the produce before signing off – and we were on our way!
If you’re a Walmart shopper and sick of trying to arrange your schedule around grocery shopping – or dealing with grocery store melt-downs – I highly recommend this service. It took me less than 10 minutes to place my order (and that’s also because I was planning as I went and didn’t sit down with a predetermined list) and they had everything loaded into my mom’s car within 5 minutes of pulling into the parking lot.
