Have you ever tasted the amazing treat that is apple butter?

I hope you have. It is one of my favourite things in the entire world, with a rich, almost caramelized apple flavour in a thick jam-like spread.

If you’ve never tasted apple butter, I am giving you the perfect excuse to rush out and buy a jar to make these apple butter scones.

Apple Butter Scones recipe - a delicious fall recipe with a soft, crumbly texture and a crunchy cinnamon-sugar topping. Subtle ad natural flavours of apple, cinnamon, and caramel.

(And if you’ve never had a scone, I’m going to suggest you put this recipe straight to the top of this week’s to-do list.)

These apple butter scones have a crumbly, yet not dry texture, and beautifully mix subtle flavours of apple, caramel, and cinnamon into each triangle-shaped wedge. They are sweet enough to be considered a treat, but not so sweet as to rule them out as breakfast fare.

And they are of course the perfect baked good to smear a generous spoonful of apple butter onto – although almost any breakfast spread will taste good on these.

Serve these decadent apple butter scones with a generous spoonful of apple butter. The perfect fall treat for breakfast or an afternoon snack

By adding a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar onto each scone before baking, these scones develop a crunchy, caramelized top that gives way to to the soft, crumbly interior.

You could opt to add a icing sugar glaze, but I think these scones are perfect without it.

We’ve attempted this recipe with both homemade apple butter and Eden’s Organic Apple Butter and it worked perfectly with both. As long as your homemade apple butter has a jam-like consistency, it will work great. (Homemade “apple cheese” which is apple butter with real butter mixed in, will also work great.)

Check out our quick recipe video to see how easy it is to make our apple butter scones. (And just to prove how forgiving they are, Ella made them and accidentally added the butter at the wrong step – and they still turned out delicious.) Apple Butter Scones Recipe

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425F
  2. Sift all dry ingredients together, set aside.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add in one egg at a time, then the 1/2 cup whipping cream, apple butter, and cinnamon.
  4. Add the dry mixture into the apple butter mixture one cup at a time, being careful not to over mix.
  5. Fold the mixture out onto a clean, floured surface and roll into a large circle, no more than 2" thick.
  6. Cut into triangles (like you would with a pizza) using either a pizza cutter or a dough cutter (I prefer using a dough cutter as it has the small ruler on the bottom for accuracy), and then brush over top with the 2 Tablespoons whipping cream. Sprinkle on cinnamon-sugar mix.
  7. Bake on a lined baking sheet for 10-15 minutes until golden and scones have formed a hard crust.
