Children who have a good understanding of the First Colour Box (or who have skipped it but have been otherwise versed in the primary colours) are ready to explore the Second Colour Box.

Introducing the full colour range (wheel), as well as the neutral colours, the Second Colour Box follows the same format as the first.

Prepare 22 tiles if you do not already have the First Colour Box; if you are building onto the First Colour Box, you will only need to prepare 16 tiles. (We used wood, but you can use cardboard or even laminated cardstock!)

Select “true” colours of the following (in either paint or paintchips): orange, purple, green, pink, gray, brown, black, and white. If using paintchips, you will need two each of each colour.

Paint or attach the paintchip to each tablet, trim off excess with an exacto knife or scissors, (if necessary seal onto the tile with Modge Podge) and place in a (fitted) small box.

To present the box, ensure that you demonstrate holding the box by the edges, as shown, to ensure that the child understands that his or her fingers should not touch the coloured portion. This real-life preparation is evident in how Montessori children handle small mirrors, photographs, etc.

Ask the child to help you find the matching tiles for the primary colours first, then the secondary colours, and then the neutral colours. You can mix the colours up and repeat this task as many times as you think the child needs. Once the child has an advanced understanding of the colours, you can encourage a memory game, if you wish.
