Yellow Submarine Lunch Box Idea
Now that Ella is attending a part-time school program, I’m having a lot of fun coming up with lunch box ideas.
This week, I packed her this sweet “Yellow Submarine” inspired bento box.
Yellow Submarine (or should I say “Yellow Numbarine”) was one of the first songs that Ella learned how to sing, and it seemed like an easy enough lunch box idea for a beginner like me to attempt.
First, I lay down some seaweed of purple cabbage – of course, seaweed salad would have been great, but Ella will eat shredded cabbage raw so I thought that would be great and keep the bread from getting soggy.
(We’ve experimented with several raw greens, and by far the favourites are baby spinach and shredded cabbage. Baby spinach is almost sweet and the cabbage is satisfyingly crunchy.)
Next I added some “bubbles” with cherry tomatoes picked from our own garden.
(Aren’t you loving all of the colours already?)
Next, I filled the small container included with our bento box with blueberries. You could do a bit of yogurt or applesauce first, and then the blueberries, but I didn’t want the next layer to get soggy.
Goldfish!
The perfect, easy addition to an ocean-themed lunch box idea. Just a few adds a cute effect, and you can buy the whole grain ones.
And, then, super easy but really my favourite part of this easy lunch box idea — the submarine!
I used half of a whole grain hot dog bun, and cut the straw down on both ends to create the periscope detail.
You can add whatever fillings your child loves, but this is an easy way to create some excitement for a food your child doesn’t usually look forward to and a perfect opportunity to work in a tuna or salmon sandwich.
What do you think? Would you try this easy submarine lunch box idea for your child?
