Homemade Rose Play Dough

Before I discovered good-quality rose extract for making rose-flavored treats (like our rosewater marshmallows), I had made the mistake of buying artificial rose water.

While the smell is pleasant, the taste is bitter and lacking… but I didn’t want a whole bottle to go to waste, so I thought I’d experiment with making a rose-scented play dough for Valentine’s Day.

This is a great homemade gift for young kids and can be paired with our Parts of a Flower play dough mats for preschool learning. While it is taste-safe for curious toddlers, there is a lot of salt so children shouldn’t be making a snack out of it.

I added the play dough to a heart-shaped box and added a tray of glitter, artificial roses, and red gems for Ella to explore and decorate the dough.

How to Make Rose Play Dough

Cook all ingredients over medium heat, constantly stirring until it forms a large ball in the center.

Smoosh down the dough to make sure that it has cooked through and then remove and turn out onto a clean surface for kneading.

Knead once you can handle the temperature, the consistency won’t be horribly effected if you need to wait until it is completely cool.

It will be sticky at first but keep kneading for at least a minute before adding in some flour as the kneading process will remove some of the stickiness. I found I didn’t need extra flour but I did need lots of extra scent during the kneading process.
