These Froot Loop maracas are a great way to upcycle some snack containers and use any bits of leftover dry goods from the pantry. It’s both an open-ended craft and a multi-cultural craft.

We made these upcycled maracas as part of our 7 Ways to Play with Froot Loops, but they could me made with beans, rice, or a variety of different dry options to lend them different sounds — kind of like a DIY Montessori Sound Cylinder!

Froot Loop Maracas: upcycled craft from the 7 Ways to Play with Froot Loops series

I had Ella help me assemble the basic maracas using her cool touch hot glue gun, applesauce containers, and a small handful of Froot Loops cereal.

It’s pretty self-explanatory, so here’s a quick photo tutorial (I’ll list the materials and some twists after the picture):

How to Make a Froot Loop Maraca Upcycled Craft for Kids

Materials for Froot Loops Maraca Craft

  • Pair of matching, empty containers with “lips” wide enough for a string of hot glue — applesauce or pudding containers work great!
  • Dry goods that will not rot in the maraca — cereal, beans, rice
  • Hot glue or white glue (white glue requires drying time)
  • Decorative add-ons: Stickers, glitter glue, washi tape with scissors, permanent markers, pom poms with glue, etc.

This was a great open-ended craft that included aspects of music and multiculturalism (which makes it a great addition for a study of North America). I liked that Ella had to follow a set process to create the basic maraca and then was able to be creative and engage with a variety of materials to decorate hers. (The other children were not included in the maraca assembly, just the decoration — I take more liberties with my own kid!)
