Snickerdoodles Recipe (with Video)
Hands down, Snickerdoodle cookies are my family’s favorite cookie! (We even named our first cat Snickerdoodle.) These cinnamon-sugar coated sugar cookies have a distinctive sweet-and-tangy taste and a wonderful, puffy, soft texture with a hint of crunch from the cinnamon sugar coating.
Best Ever Snickerdoodle Cookies Recipe
Seriously, if I don’t put these cookies away the second they are done cooling, I am likely to eat 5 of them just walking around the kitchen. Does anyone else think of pretend chores they need to do in the kitchen when they want to sneak a treat?
It took me a while to develop this recipe for the best ever snickerdoodle cookies because I am PICKY when it comes to cookies. I wanted these cookies to be:
- light and airy, melt-in-your-mouth cookies – no dense, hard cookies here
- more flavorful than sugar cookies
- thick and chewy
- soft with hints of crispiness
And these cookies deliver on every point! The combination of vanilla, cinnamon-sugar and cream of tartar makes for a sweet cookie that is reminiscent of a sugar cookie, but with a light tang from the cream of tartar and that wonderful warmth from the cinnamon.
Hypothetically, these cookies will last in an airtight container stored at room temperature for about a week… but they always disappear in my house much faster than that!
Why is it called a snickerdoodle? Honestly, the story of why it’s called a snickerdoodle is a bit unappetizing. Whether it came from the German “Schnecke Knodel” for “snail dumpling” or the Dutch “snekrad” for snail.. either way, we’re down to the cookies being named for their “small, snail-like shape.” Personally, I don’t get the connection between snails and snickerdoodles, but there you have it.
Why is cream of tartar in snickerdoodles? Not only does the cream of tartar add a slight tang to the cookies, it also helps give snickerdoodles their unmistakable crinkly and puffy appearance and chewy texture.
