Over the weekend, Ella and I decided to throw a spontaneous Sleeping Beauty Tea Party. Since it was her idea, Ella was in charge of the important aspects – like making the perfect princess dessert! These Princess Aurora Swirl Cupcakes were quick, delicious, and cute to boot!

Princess Aurora Swirl Cupcakes - the perfect princess birthday party cupcake, these "Briar Rose cupcakes" have a pink and blue swirl cake which would also be perfect for a gender reveal party cupcake! These sweet little treats are easy enough for the kids to make, too.

Sleeping Beauty Cupcake Recipe

Ella and I started off Saturday morning with our usual crafts and family time when she came up with the idea to have a Sleeping Beauty tea party and invite a few friends over for crafts, snacks, and a movie.

With less than a day to prepare – including inviting friends, picking up supplies, cleaning our disaster of a house, making the food, and setting up the activities… well, it was a challenge, but it’s just our type of challenge!

These cupcakes are probably my favourite aspect of the party – completely kid-made, they are gorgeous yet extremely easy. The rose-like swirled frosting is inspired by Sleeping Beauty’s name when she was in hiding from Maleficent (Briar Rose) and is the same frosting technique Ella learned when we made our Strawberry Vanilla Cupcakes– the frosting tip really does most of the work as long as you keep swirling! We made the princess cupcakes with a pink and blue “swirl” batter to play on the “Make it pink! Make it blue!” magic fight Merryweather & Flora had while making Princess Aurora’s dress & cake for her 16th birthday.

Personally, I feel confident trusting Ella with a hand mixer. It’s much easier for her to handle than a stand mixer and it allows for multiple bowls to be in use at the same time. Choose what makes you most comfortable – even if that means doing the mixing yourself. While it’s a great thing to break out of your comfort zone, you also want to be positive and not hovering throughout the baking experience.

We presented our Princess Aurora Swirl Cupcakes on a sweet doll’s bed to really bring the Sleeping Beauty theme home. The cupcakes were delicious and the girls loved the swirl of pink and blue.

These would also be perfect cupcakes for a baby shower or gender reveal party!

Princess Cupcake Ingredients

  • Boxed cake mix
    • Plus ingredients (use olive oil for oil, milk for water – make it as rich as possible)
  • Pink and Blue food coloring <– this set of food coloring has lasted me forever and I love that it creates highly saturated colors with just a drop

How to Make Princess Swirl Cupcakes

Follow the box directions to make the cake batter. We often make cake from scratch but we decided that we had enough on our plates with the party commitments – so as long as the frosting was from scratch, we were good!

Pour half of the batter into a separate bowl. Add blue food colouring to one bowl, and pink/red food colouring to another. Stir to mix, adjust the colour as needed.

Next, you’re going to portion out your cupcakes. If you’re using a different sized liner than usual, make sure to do a test cupcake to see how high it will rise, if the new liner will effect baking time, etc.

First, add some pink batter to the bottom, top with a couple spoonfuls of blue batter, and then top with a final scoop of pink. Depending on your liner, you want to either fill your cupcake 2/3 full or right to the edge.

Bake at 375 for the domed cupcake tops, or 350 for flatter cupcakes, according to package directions.

While the cupcakes are baking & cooling, make the frosting.

Whip butter, 3 cups icing sugar, vanilla extract, 1 Tablespoon cream, and pink food colouring together to make pink buttercream. You could even add some rosewater extract but I didn’t take the risk with picky eaters. Adjust the icing sugar and cream to get your desired flavour and consistency.

Add the 2D Wilton tip to a piping bag and scoop in the frosting. Swirl onto cooled cupcakes, starting in the middle and applying even pressure as you swirl outwards.
