We’re interrupting our usual schedule of kids’ activities, parenting inspiration, and family-friendly food to bring you 31 days of Kids Kitchen Recipes and Activities.

Today, we’re sharing a simple kid-made snack that is perfect for those fresh summer strawberries.

Kid-made Strawberry Nutella Snack - an easy healthy snack idea for kids to make themselves! A great kids kitchen recipe

Ella came up with this yummy Nutella Strawberry combination on her own, and I think allowing children to come up with their own concoctions in the kitchen can be a wonderful experience.

You can approach the idea wild willy nilly and let kids just do what they want, or you can be more intentional and guide them to think through the flavour combinations that they are considering, and discuss concepts like balance, texture, contrast, and so on.

We started off by simply making toast – I have taught Ella how to safely operate the toaster, but the rule is that she must still wait for supervision and we use our bamboo toast tongs to prevent any issues.

After making the toast, she suggested Nutella, which we don’t normally eat as a snack — I consider it more of a baking ingredient, personally — so I agreed that she could have Nutella if she chose a healthy option to balance it out.

We’ve previously had chocolate-covered strawberries and fruit with chocolate fondue in Montreal, so it was cool to see how Ella drew on her previous culinary experiences to come up with strawberries as a topping.

After carefully spreading the Nutella on the toast, she used her strawberry huller and strawberry slicer to prep the strawberries and carefully arranged them on top of the Nutella.

You could substitute cream cheese for the Nutella, or any sweet fruit option for the strawberries, making this an incredibly versatile but easy healthy snack option for kids!
