This month’s Virtual Book Club for Kids’ selection is Mo Willem’s Goldilocks & the Three Dinosaurs. In this fractured fairy tale version, the dinosaurs make hot chocolate pudding instead of porridge and we just couldn’t resist making some of our own!

A delicious twist on homemade pudding, this hot chocolate pudding uses 3 ingredients to make luscious, warm chocolate pudding out of hot chocolate powder! A super simple recipe for kids to make with just a little bit of help when it comes to the microwave step.

If you’re unfamiliar with fractured fairy tales, they are fun twists on classic stories like Cinderella or Goldilocks and the 3 Bears that switch out key details in the story for a strong narrative change. Maybe the story will be cast in a modern setting with more relatable problems, or the antagonist (villain) becomes the hero – the sky is the limit.

Fractured fairy tales are more than just different versions of the same story, they are usually comical and the changes are made to explore a different concept or perspective.

Creating fractured fairy tales is actually a wonderful creative writing or story telling activity with kids. Kids can even act out their fractured fairy tales as a sort of improv performance!

Goldilocks and the 3 Dinosaurs is a wacky version of the story which suggests that the Dinosaurs are actually setting Goldilocks up! And now that we’ve made our own hot chocolate pudding, I can’t blame her for falling for it.

Ella loves this recipe so much she actually made a recipe video so that other kids can get in on the fun – so be sure to check it out and then don’t forget to scroll down to grab your free printable recipe card:

How to Make Hot Chocolate Pudding

We naturally started off with hot chocolate powder – the same container we’ve been trying to use up since making hot chocolate cloud dough! From making oobleck, we’ve learned how cornstarch can be used as an excellent thickener and it worked perfectly in this recipe.

While this recipe can be prepared on the oven, we decided to use the microwave because I know not all families are as comfortable as I am with letting young children cook on the stove.

First, gather your ingredients:

Pour in the milk and mix thoroughly.

Heat the hot chocolate pudding for 3 minutes in the microwave, then stir. Continue to heat and stir in 1 minute increments until the pudding achieves the consistency you desire.

Decorate the pudding with whatever mix-ins you’d like! We went with dinosaur sprinkles, which I’m particularly fond of after a special memory at Molly’s Cupcake in Chicago (it’s the inspiration between the pink glitter dinosaur that you see when you hover over images on this site) and it worked perfectly with the Goldilocks & the 3 Dinosaurs book!

The pudding is delicious warm, but you can also cool it in the fridge before serving.

  1. My girls would love this!! We love this books too. So excited about the virtual book club. I will definitely be trying out this and the activities from the other bloggers with my girls.

  2. Thank you! I’m fine with our daughter using the stove, but she is skittish of it, ever since burning herself when she was two. The more microwave recipes we make, the less afraid she becomes of the stove & other heated appliances (weird…but, whatever works!).
