Okay, so I know I share a decent amount of indulgent dessert recipes here but we really do eat 90% healthy. Treats like these kid-made trail mix chocolate melts allow us to have bite-sized treats that are pure indulgence without being too naughty.

These kid-made trail mix chocolate melts are a quick dessert the kids can help make while you're preparing supper, and they will be ready by dessert! Add a bit of salt to the grown up chocolate melts for an amazing sweet-salty flavor

Ok, so I definitely have to pause because I just love chubby little toddler hands! When do they lose that? My daughter still has those cute little finger dimples at 4 and I think I’ll probably cry the day I realize they are gone.

But those little hands are important because they show just how easy these chocolate trail mix melts are to make – because they belong to one of daycare children who is only 2 years old!

We made our chocolate trail mix melts with dark chocolate, but you can easily swap out milk chocolate or even white chocolate. And of course, just like with my double chocolate caramel-stuffed cookies, I had to sprinkle a bit of crunchy seat salt onto my melts for an amazing sweet and salty contrast. We didn’t add nuts so that Ella would have the option to take some to school with her, but that crunchy-melty-chewy combination would also be a treat.

The chocolate just melts on your tongue the minute you bite into these little discs, and with those little pops of flavor from the dried fruit it really is a satisfying treat. The kids enjoyed them without salt, and they can keep in or out of the fridge for up to a week.

How to make these kid-made chocolate trail mix melts - a healthy dessert kids will love

How to Make Trail Mix Chocolate Melts

First, assemble your ingredients:

  • 1 cup dark chocolate squares or chips, melted
  • 1/2 cup trail mix or dried fruit
  • 2 teaspoons good-quality sea salt

We always have plenty of dried fruit for homemade trail mixes, so Miss V chose the mix-ins that she thought looked the most delicious for our trail mix chocolate melts – I love that we almost have a full rainbow!
