For today’s installation of 31 days of Kids Kitchen Recipes and Activities, we’re sharing a treat inspired by my favorite Sesame Street character — a No-Churn Cookie Monster Ice Cream!

Cookie Monster Ice Cream Recipe

I love no-churn ice cream recipes — they are easy enough for kids to help make (or as you can see, make completely independently) while still being tasty and avoiding some of the junk that can be found in commercial ice creams.

There are a few different ways to make no-churn ice creams but in this recipe we rely on whipping cream and sweetened condensed milk to give our base, and some food colouring for a light blue colour.

Like for our no-churn cookies and cream ice cream, we went with store-bought Oreos (and Chips Ahoy), but you could definitely use a homemade alternative.

Kitchen Tools You May Find Helpful

  • Electric mixer <– this is a great hand mixer if you don’t want to make the investment into a stand mixer
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Loaf pan
  • Ice Cream Scoop
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Sharp kitchen knife
  • Wooden spoon or spatula <– I like these spatulas because they are one solid piece and don’t have removable heads for bacteria to get trapped underneath. Plus they are heat-resistant and have a lifetime warranty.

How to Make Cookie Monster Ice Cream

Start off by placing your whipping cream and vanilla in a bowl and whipping on medium speed for 6-10 minutes.

If you don’t think your child’s patience level is quite that long, you can start the whipping process for them and have them come join you when the mixture starts to seem a bit airy, but it’s still incredibly rewarding for children to witness the whipping cream transform from a milk-like liquid to a frothy and fluffy whipped cream. (And it will happen.. you might not believe it at the 3 minute mark, when it feels like you’ve been whipping for 10 minutes already, but then it will magically puff up. If it’s an extremely humid day you can help things along with a pinch of cream of tartar, but avoid that for as long as you can.)

Next pour the sweetened condensed milk into a measuring cup or small bowl and stir in your desired amount of blue food colouring. Make it slightly more saturated than you would want your final ice cream to be as its easier to add colour at this stage than to adjust the ice cream’s colour after the sweetened condensed milk and whipped cream have been folded into each other.

Gently pour the blue sweetened condensed milk into the whipped cream and fold with a spatula until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Pour the mixture into a loaf pan and drop the cookies throughout. Cover tightly and freeze 6 hours or overnight to set.

And there you have it – easy peasy! No-churn ice creams are an extremely rewarding dessert for kids to help make & you can experiment with fun combinations that you wouldn’t be able to find at a grocery store – making it perfect for themed parties.
