Ella is obsessed with making homemade bath products – from our fizzy bath bombs to homemade sugar scrubs – so when we made some “Pamper Kits” for her teachers this Christmas, she insisted on making a Peppermint Swirl Sugar Scrub!

An easy kid-made peppermint swirl sugar scrub perfect for an indulgent homemade gift - for teachers, parents or grandparents

Peppermint and vanilla is one of my favorite scent combinations for the holidays – I add a couple drops to a pot of simmering water on the stove while I make my morning coffee and the scent stays all day. (I find it safer than using a candle during daycare hours.)

While we’ve had a lot of fun experimenting with different methods of making sugar scrubs (using dehydrated fruits, whipped coconut oil, etc) we usually revert back to this basic recipe as it’s easy for Ella to do independently and this method actually allows for a longer-lasting sugar scrub than some of our other recipes. (Whipping the coconut oil is nice if used within a couple weeks, but after awhile it melts and changes the consistency.)

Ella also made this Grinch sugar scrub for her other teacher and they both raved about the thoughtful gifts. This makes a great gift on it’s own, or a nice homemade touch to store-bought present – especially if you’re encouraging the recipient to pamper themselves for the holidays.

Ingredients for an Easy Peppermint Swirl Sugar Scrub

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Few drops peppermint essential oil
  • Few drops red food dye

Tip: you can skip the red food dye

  • Mason jar for storing

How to Make Peppermint Sugar Scrub

Place one cup of sugar plus 1/4 cup melted coconut oil in one bowl.

Stir the coconut oil into the sugar until completely distributed – it should have the texture of wet sand.

Add the vanilla extract to one bowl and mix completely to blend. Set aside.

In the second bowl, add the sugar but before adding the coconut oil, mix in the red food dye.

Stir completely to distribute, adding more coconut oil as needed.

Add just a couple drops of peppermint essential oil and stir to combine.

Spoon a few tablespoons of the vanilla-scented sugar scrub into your mason jar – we have used funnels in the past, but I find that it just gets clogged up so with a wide-mouthed mason jar like this, just a spoon is great!

Layer on a few tablespoons of the red peppermint-scented sugar scrub, and then alternate layers until your mason jar is full.

Tie some baking twine or a handmade tag around the lid for a final touch and your gift is ready to give!
