DIY Dice
Making homemade toys and learning materials is a great way to extend the budget – and it doesn’t have to be complicated! Today we’re making DIY dice for some quick Math Games for kids.
Dice have so many educational and entertainment uses. We always “borrow” dice from board games whenever we want to make a game, so I thought “why not make some DIY dice to go with our DIY games?” We took our time making a couple different sets and may try painting them once we get our final products done.
One of the great things about these DIY Dice is you can make them any size you want! Ella and I tested out the clay after it was dry to be sure it was a suitable material for kids to use. We threw them, a little too hard, just to be sure they wouldn’t crack – and they didn’t! Here’s how we made our own set of dice.
Materials to Make DIY Dice
- Natural Clay
- Toothpick
- Small amount of water
How to Make DIY Dice
The clay we had on hand is a neutral color, but you can very easily used colored clay to make your dice. (Modeling clay may work, but we haven’t tried it yet.)
First, make a ball of clay about the size of a quarter. If you want your dice to be bigger make a little bigger ball. If you want them smaller, make smaller balls.
Then carefully mold the clay ball into a cube. You may need to wet your finger tips just a bit if you clay is too dry. Be careful not to get to much water or the clay will be slimy and your end product may not be as smooth.
Once you have formed your cube, use the toothpick to poke holes in the clay for the sides of your dice.
Then let your dice dry! We left ours overnight just to be sure they were completly dry.
As an extension you may paint your dice with clay safe paint!
I know you are going to find TONS of uses for your new set of DIY Dice!
