My dad has always been a fan of the Charlie Brown holiday specials, so I thought it would be fun to put together a DIY Charlie Brown Christmas Tree as a special surprise for him.

This was an incredibly easy and quick Christmas DIY – less than five minutes of assembly and glue-drying time. Honestly, it took longer to gather the craft materials together than actually making the craft!

Personally, I allow my daughter to use a hot glue gun while supervised so this was a fun craft for us to do together, however I’m usually not a fan of crafts that limits the possibilities of the end product – which this craft does because we were aiming to create a replica of Charlie Brown’s tree.

I thought I’d want to drill into the middle of the paint stir sticks to securely fasten the fake tree branch, but we ended up not needing it at all – so pretend it’s not in the above picture!

Charlie Brown’s tree doesn’t have the little berries on it, instead it just has a lone red ornament that pulls the top of the branch into an arch. I used what I already hand on hand to make this craft, and I think visually, this craft still makes the same impact and leaves the same impression as a more similar tree – small substitutions like this only serve to personalize the craft and I don’t think they take away from it at all.

You could alternatively use a real tree branch, just keep in mind that the needles will start shedding eventually.

How to make a homemade Charlie Brown Christmas Tree

First, I assembled the base of the tree, using the hot glue to make an “X” with the paint stir sticks and then adding the small wooden squares to the ends of the stir sticks.

(The addition of the wooden squares is good for balancing the craft if you are attaching your tree branch the way that I did – if you only attach it to the top of the sticks, you can skip this step.)

Next, I twisted the bottom of the fake tree branch around the stir sticks, ensuring that it wasn’t budging and was tilted at just the right angle for a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree.

Finally, I wrapped a piece of blue felt around the base, covering up the bottom of the stick and the intersection of the “X” and then used a small dab of hot glue to secure the felt.

Using hot glue allows for the craft to be secure, while also allowing you to remove the felt and untwist the fake tree branch if you want to modify your craft later, or use the materials for another craft. (Something that happens often at our house!)
