Sometimes the simplest kids craft ideas are the biggest hits in my house.

Like this simple invitation to paint with some cut flowers that we did as part of our introduction to botany for kids — even if the flowers have seen some better days, they are still a beautiful and sensory-rich painting tool with gorgeous patterns that no paint brush could imitate.

This was such an exciting art activity for the kids. They could not believe that I was letting them use flowers to paint with — I thought one was going to refuse to participate he found the idea so silly!

You could alternatively use fake flowers to paint with, or leaves, or different bits of nature that you gather during a nature walk — sticks, grass, weeds, what have you!

Materials We Used for Painting with Flowers

The kids loved experimenting with the different textures that the flowers and leafs created as they left their imprints on the paper. It was also cool to see how they could manipulate the flowers to get a variety of prints or effects from the same flower (just as you can with a regular paintbrush).

Ella was also thrilled to figure out that she could write her name with the flower’s stem.

This painting with flowers art activity goes beyond simply imprinting the patterns of the flowers onto paper — it encourages children to get up close and investigate flowers. Children will naturally notice certain characteristics of the flowers through the painting process that they may have otherwise never noticed, for example, noticing a sticky sap on the flower’s stem, or noticing little ridges on flower petals. This can lead to further questions about flowers and a greater interest in the science of botany for kids.

I hope you liked this painting with flowers art activity for kids!

  1. I love simple crafts…they’re always a hit with the kids and I don’t have to do a whole lot! I’ve got some flowers from Mother’s Day that are looking pretty sad now. Maybe we will try this out! 🙂

Great way to use up flowers once they’re past their best and I like that each flower will create a different effect. Great activity!
