Birthday Popcorn Balls
While we love to eat our popcorn plain or with healthy toppings, we also have so much fun making these popcorn balls. Here’s how to make birthday popcorn balls in the kids’ kitchen!
We make popcorn balls often, not just because they are delicious, but because they are an easy treat that the kids can make almost entirely by themselves with little assistance from me.
Popcorn balls are a great party food with great wow factor and very little prep work. I also love that they can be eaten without any cutlery – simply serve them in muffin liners, or even put them on a candy stick! They take less than 5 minutes to make and can be ready to eat in an hour – so pin them for a great last-minute classroom snack or solution for when another planned party food doesn’t work out!

How to Make Birthday Popcorn Balls
Air pop some popcorn (if your popper has to use an oil, try to make it a flavourless oil or use butter to pop).
Meanwhile, melt the marshmallows and butter in the microwave in 25 second bursts, stirring well in between heatings to prevent the marshmallows from burning.
Mix in the popcorn and allow the mixture to cool to a temperature that you can comfortably handle.
Wet your hands lightly and shape handfuls of popcorn into balls. The kids love this step, and it can be done when the popcorn ball mixture is cool just not hardened.
Set the shaped popcorn balls onto a greased baking sheet or slipmat and sprinkle with your favourite colour of sprinkles. Alternatively, you can roll the popcorn in sprinkles to coat.

I like to make these popcorn balls small enough to fit into silicone baking cups for easy serving. You can even press them into a brownie pan and make “popcorn squares.”
If you prefer a softer popcorn ball, you can let these set out at room temperature, but we prefer a crunchy texture whenever possible, so we keep our popcorn balls in the fridge until we are ready to eat them.
We’ve also made these popcorn balls as popcorn snowballs and popcorn ball monsters – there are so many fun variations you can do!
